Electric fence for dogs? - csgray - 12-19-2009

Starting the first day we brought my puppies home we have had issues with the neighbor behind us trying to feed my dogs and calling them to come into her yard through the fence. However, we don't want them out of our yard EVER if they are not on leash and with us, and we have told her so again and again. But she has continued to encourage them and reward them for escaping, and the end result is these are now Houdini dogs who easily climb over a 5 foot field fence and can conquer every fence method we've tried. Right after Thanksgiving the crazy neighbor lady escalated to luring my dogs out of the yard with turkey carcasses and other meat placed close to the fence line, so we have to keep these two active young dogs inside or chained when they have a fully fenced acre to run around on. None of the rest of our neighbors want our dogs running around their yards, and one of them has a tendency to try to herd children, which really freaks parents out, so we need to take serious measures. These are wicked smart kelpie/heeler type 1 year old poi dogs, about 35 lbs, and kelpies are notorious escape artists. I have decided that all I want for Christmas is a way to keep my dogs in the yard. I am not interested in using the invisible fence with the radio collars.

My questions are: what is the best place to get electric fencing on the Big Island, we would be willing to travel for a better deal. We can either use several strands all the way around, or cross fence half way with the net style fence keeping the dogs well away from the back neighbor, which type would work better for dogs? There are definite pros and cons to dividing up the yard.

Mahalo for any insights from people who have used electric fence for containing dogs.

My dog walked right through an electric horse fence the other day. He didn't appear affected by it AT ALL. I got shocked by it once, it wasn't super hard but certainly not something I enjoyed.

We had a houdini dog on our old acre lot on the mainland more than a decade ago learned that if she wedged a stick up through the electric fence line, she was free (we had a forest of oak trees, so getting a stick was the easy part for her).

We ended up with long (~300') heavy duty zip line, sturdy chain & a super multi-point sled pulling harness (dog also could weasel out of most collars & harnesses... ) with REPLACEABLE, hardened pulley (she would wear down the pulleys often) to connect the chain onto the zip line

Stupid dog would even ride the zip line, running out as fast as she could until she hit the end of the line, then she flew up & around, repeatedly - we had take off & landing ruts in the yard from this!

ETA: Possibly adding the electric line to the other fence you have might work. Who knows what the crazy neighbor might do to the electric fence.... problem with this is the temptation of the neighbor may ruin most any plan...

Hey Carol...
Check dells or marandas for electric goat fence, it looks like field fence and not too pricey considering the underground kind with the collars. We use the electric goat fence for our dogs, this will really help with the climbing over the fence problem.

setting my soul free....

What a weird scenario. If it was me, I would build a redwood privacy fence tightly woven all along that side of my property. They sell 6 foot boards at Home Depot. My dogs are the houdini artists of all time, (Part heeler, part pointer) and they can not escape though the redwood portion. I know it's pricey, but we built ours about 5 years ago, I've restained it once in this time and it still looks new. Our "galvanized" fence part which is around the rest of the property, (redwoood is only in front facing the road) is now almost completely rusted away. We will need to replace it completely very soon, parts of it you can flick away with your finger. I'm sorry to hear that. The turkey carcass is scary because they could choke. What a loon. Angela

Mahalo Craig, I'll check with them. Lika ended up spending a night in doggie jail after she climbed out and decided to take on the neighbor's Great Dane, so now we are keeping them under strict lock down and they are bored little doggies. I just want them to be safe and contained so they can run around and get some exercise.

Nalu,

Do you mean galvanized chain link fencing? Doesn't last?

RE: Electric fence for dogs? - Nalu - 12-20-2009

Sadly, Mine didn't. It only lasted about 4 years before rust spots started showing up. Now at 5 years. parts of it are more like rust dust. It isn't chainlink, but it is galvanized and it was the thickest, most expensive fencing Del's carried and recommended. We were told redwood wouldn't last, but that fence is still in top notch condition, I used Behrs redwood waterproof stain on it. We're going to have to make a decision on what to replace the metal portion with. We've got 7 1/2 acres of which about 2 acres are fenced, so the redwood would be really pricey to put all around. Carol,I was thinking about your situation.
It looks like electric fence is not full-proof and may be traumatic for the dogs.
I'd understand if you don't want that lady in your dog's life at all.
But may be she would be happy with a little "supervised" visit?
(Like accompany you when you walk the dogs?)
Not fun,I know. But instead of investing in possibly very expensive fence, may be it's a compromise you'd consider?

Quoting Carey:

" problem with this is the temptation of the neighbor may ruin most any plan..."

Stillhope,
That is a nice thought but the reality is that this person has a very loose grip on appropriate social conventions, is seriously passive aggressive, and has absolutely no concept of boundaries. The thought of allowing her any close access to our lives is truly chilling.

If I tried the walks with her I think she would start to think that the dogs were hers.

I think we will reinforce the current fence with electric so they are discouraged from climbing over and hope for the best.
