Anyone missing 2 cockatoos?? - nortonh - 10-19-2009
I live in HPP and for the past 3 afternoons 2 cockatoos (like Fred on Baretta)have been flying over our house and roosting in our trees.
Anyone missing 2 noisy beautiful birds??

Do they stay overnight? There used to be a guy on one of the dead end roads off Makuu near 19th who let his cockatiels fly around in the daytime, but they would go home at night. Cockatiels are smaller than, but quite similar, to cockatoos, so I thought maybe this was a clue. From a distance, they might look like cockatoos. I've often wondered why, with all the invasive bird species we have, there don't seeem to be any parrot, lovebird, or cockatoo colonies taking root.

On one of my stays back in 05 I was staying at the Hilo Hawaiian. Each morning a large parrot green red yellow, perhaps a large Amazon parrot, flew across the lawn area every morning for a week. Have no idea where it came from perhaps Uncle Billies, or where it was headed, downtown Hilo!
It reminded me of the wild colonies of parrots and love birds I've seen in Studio City, and around Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. I always enjoyed seeing them. That said, while in Oahu recently, there was a darling little house on the corner of Prince Edward and another street whose roof was COVERED with white pigeons every evening. The yard was bare but immaculate with food and water bowls and raked yard. But the roof which looked new was covered with birds and guess what else.
So depending on where birds roost, I love them all.

I loved seeing the parrots in San Francisco whenever in The City. I used to have that film about the guy who cares so much for them somewhere. Nice.
Makes me miss my Amazon Red Head guy. He was sweet.

You can also put a free ad in the paper for "found" animals.
Carrie, you can rent a DVD documentary on the Parrots of Telegraph hill, it is quite good, especially since you had seen them.
I have a friend in San Diego who has about 50 wild parrots roosting in her trees every night... drives them crazy.
I agree with you on "selective enjoyment" of our feathered friends Mella. Have you ever seen the pigeons in the UK? They are as big as chickens!

A hearty "second" on the Parrots of Telegraph Hill. It is a beautiful, poignant documentary. Oddly, I saw it on Molokai.

I'm pretty sure they've been removed. I was up there with Hawaii Forest and Trail a while back and that's what they told us. We visited the crater where they used to be.
