Farmers Markets and Others Targeted-Tax Squad! - Menehune - 11-08-2009 In the news "Hawaii state tax squad zeroes in on cash-only businesses!". Tax Squad How will this affect our Big Island 'Farmers Markets" - especially Makuu and Volcano? The article reads like a "flashback" to "secret police" of former USSR. Hawaii needs money but why hit the 'lowest denominator" and not the 'highest"! It says "garage sales" are exempt - for now. I've been to garage sales stocked as well as WalMart! RE: Farmers Markets and Others Targeted-Tax Squad! - rusty h - 11-08-2009 bummer, wonder what the pay is and seems like a backward way to gain tax monies. i wouldnt want a job like that, thats for sure. peace RE: Farmers Markets and Others Targeted-Tax Squad! - JerryCarr - 11-08-2009 Taxing flea markets and farmers' markets is common in some states. In Georgia, they had special squads whose sole job was to tap into this part of the economy. In fact, some flea markets around Atlanta required vendors to either produce proof of tax registration or buy a temporary permit on the spot before selling anything. Once registered, tax had to be paid or penalties were assessed. In a budgetary crisis, I'm not surprised to see Hawaii looking at this option, although I personally think agricultural and home produced products should be exempted. RE: Farmers Markets and Others Targeted-Tax Squad! - Devany - 11-08-2009 Usually when I buy something from a farmer, "tax is included in the price"[ ![]() Aloha au i Hawai`i, devany www.myhawaiianhome.blogspot.com www.eastbaypotters.blogspot.com RE: Farmers Markets and Others Targeted-Tax Squad! - mdd7000 - 11-08-2009 quote:No, this doesn't "suck". Aren't you one of the county/state workers that asked for taxes to be raised in other threads so that you and your co-workers could keep full pay? If some people are dodging taxes, they should be kept to the same standard as the rest of us, right? RE: Farmers Markets and Others Targeted-Tax Squad! - ric - 11-08-2009 The idea of enforcing taxes where fair seems appropriate. What is scary is that they seem to be expanding power to eliminate any 'due process', and this means a certain invasion of privacy even for those paying their fair share. It is hard to pin down just exactly what they are targeting, because in the article, they are talking in circles (we are going after so-and-so, but NOT the Girl Scouts), but seems all they need is a whim and they can sieze everything you have while they figure it out. Apparently there will also be some groups that will be exempt from this kind of scrutiny and enforcement. . . it just depends who you are. RE: Farmers Markets and Others Targeted-Tax Squad! - JerryCarr - 11-08-2009 quote:Unless you're somewhere they have a VAT, "tax is included in the price" usually means no tax is being paid.[ ![]() RE: Farmers Markets and Others Targeted-Tax Squad! - mdd7000 - 11-08-2009 quote:Sure. Lower taxes so that there is more money for investment. Stop voting in people like Emily Naeole who have no clue as to how business and investment work to create jobs and wealth. Government has never spent money in a wise manner, has it? I would love to see real examples. RE: Farmers Markets and Others Targeted-Tax Squad! - mdd7000 - 11-08-2009 quote:I do get it. You have made several posts in the past couple months about how everyone should pay more in taxes to save your (and your co-workers) jobs, etc. I did not "target" you. You have made your position very clear to all on this forum. I did not assume you were speaking for yourself about the lack of taxes being paid on sales in the farmer's markets. I did assume you were thinking they were above the tax laws, am I not right? Should they not also pay the same taxes as the rest of us? Would the paying of sales tax (GET) by hundreds, if not thousands of vendors potentially have helped keep your job? I have not posted anything about my plight until tonight, unlike you. I kept it quiet. I am sorry that you have lost your job as I do know what you are going through. I do understand that some government employees have jobs that affect the lives of people and children in very positive ways. Please stop taking it so personally. RE: Farmers Markets and Others Targeted-Tax Squad! - ric - 11-09-2009 Well said, mdd. All this talk of taxes and helping the economy keeps reminding me of the so-called stimulus, which was directed solely to gov't agencies and employees, while at the time only the private sector was getting hit hard. Furthermore, for those of you who like to force the rest of us to give big $$ to the gov't to help the economy, the Chicago Tribune just published a revealing article on how the fed's are saying how many jobs they saved, one example . . .that they saved 467 jobs at a school that has only ever employed 290. The cases go on and on. A waste. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/education/chi-education-stimulus-04-nov04,0,4659134.story People need to look back to the founders of this country, and learn just what they had in mind for the function of the federal government, . . . just what made this country so great up until now, and NONE of it has any connection to what is happening now in USA. |
