Getting HI licence plate - StillHope - 12-04-2009
After I got my vehicle I did the safety check at a gas station.
My 30 days are about to expire.
I need to get the insurance -the cheapest one
and apply for the license plate.
Where and how fast I can do it ?

You can call Geico for a quote on insurance, and you can print an insurance card from the online website once you buy the insurance, or have them fax it to you. It only takes two days or so to get the card in the mail if you prefer to wait for it. You need to take the insurance card and the inspection into the DMV office, take your title and current registration also. Make sure you have everything or you will have to go back.
Is the Hilo DMV the closest one to where you live?
So far Geico has had the best rates for us, but we have our daughter still on our policy. They do payment plans also.

AIG Hawaii (now Farmer's) had the cheapest rates for us, way under Geico.
AIG has an office in the Prince Kuhio Mall in Hilo. They can hand you the insurance card on the spot and you can then go straight over to the DMV office and get your plates. Don't go near lunchtime - it may be a long wait.

I don't know where the DMV is,but can Google it,I guess.

I have been with GEICO for 10 years until two years ago when I received an unsolicited offer from Liberty Mutual that was 30% less than GEICO! I called GEICO to ask if they could match the rate but they said no, so I switched to Liberty Mutual.

Stillhope, when shopping for insurance, you have to compare apples to apples. A lower rate from one company may not mean lower cost insurance. They could be quoting you less insurance. Additionally, you need to be looking at insurance based on your driving record. Since it a daunting task to go to each carrier and compare rates, the State has done that for you.
Each year the State takes a specific type of driver with a specific type of vehicle, and they compare what each carrier charges for a specific level of insurance based on that driver and vehicle. They also go one step further and also compare rates if that driver had a moving violation. This will let you see a snapshot of what carriers charge based on the exact same driver and vehicle.

The islandwide list is the most comprehensive premium info for all islands. Also check the report for Hawaii island as well, since that will list the complaint ranking. No good having a low price policy if the carrier has the worst satisfaction ranking of all companies.

That is really interesting! That would be a good idea for ALL states!
I see car insurance is about half what we have to pay here. ( I live in a big city 2 million+ and car theft is big time here). At least something is CHEAPER in Hawaii....

Eight, suprised you pay so much on the mainland. We found that we are paying 25% more on the big island than we currently pay for identical car on the mainland, living in a city of 600k. Notice that the example is for liability of 20k/40k. Anyone with any assets at all should carry 10 times that.
