Hawaii island ruined tourism - solar - 12-05-2009

The more I tromp around this island the more I realize this island had tourism spoon fed to it. The local government over the years has continued to piss its tourism resources down the drain.

Im compiling a list. Ive started with a few that are foremost in my mind.

Either one. If good points pop up here. Ill transfer them. The list has to be a long one if I can think of a dozen items without putting much thought.

Flumin Da Ditch closed because of a 6.6 or so QUAKE that made the tunnels unsafe. Blaming lack of maintenance sounds uninformed. The folks of North Kohala have busted their ass to restore the ditch for ag water. If the "ride" couldn't be brought back it was not feasible. Let's not be simplistic. Now the same folks are doing a zipline.

Personally I'm glad this island isn't all about "rides." Let those folks go to Maui. We have something more genuine to offer.

The train or railroad was destroyed by the 1946 tsunami. At the time it was too costly to rebuild.

Many of those locked gates across public roads were put there by local residents who want to keep people out. They also illegally place no trespassing signs on public lands.

Most of the cane filed roads are not even PUBLIC roads (the term "cane field roads" seems to me to imply the private cane field roads, many of which are locked, since they are private roads...) hence the locks....

Some of the locked roads are for much more IMPORTANT reasons than tourism. Many upper roads are locked to preserve the watershed.... without which we would not have drinking water (ETA: you can get the keys for some of these, with a permit...)ETAII: everything, including catchment, relies on this watershed, so please respect it & measures to preserve it...

Take some time to learn more about this island, rather than judge it from passing.... it has much to teach all of us.

BTW: Solar, you do not seem to have a long term image of the island, most of your tourism complaints seem to be those of a tourist without much long term or recent knowledge of the island... I may be wrong, but you may want to do a little more research before casting "dozens" of complaints.

UH-Hilo is a great resource to start your research. The library has many resources in the Hawaiiana section & many of the profs have spent years studying the cost/benefit of tourism from many different perspectives.

Darn. I thought I was swatting at a hornets nest here. I thought I really had a good issue. Perhaps not. Ohhh well....
