CFL problems - leilaniguy - 12-08-2009

In about the last month, I've had 5 CFL bulbs blow out. When I removed them, the coil was loose from the base. A friend mentioned 2 on his back porch had blown in the last couple of weeks. Anybody else having this happen? Maybe they just aren't suitable for this humidity?

that's weird. us, too. but, just one. another one has been acting funny. and, one of our smoke detectors just started chirping.

Maybe it is the humidity, we have those bulbs in everything and they are supposed to last for a long time, every month we lose two or three. And one of our smoke alarms started chirping also, we just replaced them all last year, as they all started chirping and would not quit, so I am hoping it is just batteries on this one now.

Are these the kind of bulbs that are to be disposed of properly, not just in the garbage?

Asly, what is the proper disposal procedure for them? Thanks!

I think we all know what this means: She's gonna blow.

Those of you who are losing bulbs, what brand are the bulbs? I had some problems some years ago with bulbs purchased at Costco, and one from Home Depot went bad. If all of the bulbs happen to be the same brand, maybe someone should contact the manufacturer. You should also keep receipts on CFLs as usually there is a warranty. Home Depot replaced a 3-way that was flickering for me. IIRC the warranty was 7 years.

Home Depot has a collection bin near the returns counter.

This is really odd as I bought nearly a couple dozen CFLs around three or four years ago, replaced nearly every bulb in my house and not one of them has stopped working so far. My utility bill dropped by about $20-30 a month and I couldn't be happier with them! They were on offer at Home Depot for around $25 for ten so thought I'd give them a try. Before then my standard light bulbs would die every few months or so.

I still have some of those standard bulbs ready as a backup but haven't had to use one of them so far.
