Lava Viewing - Open On New Years?? - Chuysmom - 01-01-2010 I can't find out if the Pali viewing is open tonight...does anyone have that information? AND...the update site says there's some activity flow-wise at the ocean entry, anyone been there recently? Hoping to take the kids tonight. Mahalo and Happy New Year! Carrie "The world is changed. Galadriel - LOTR RE: Lava Viewing - Open On New Years?? - Greg - 01-01-2010 Hi Carrie, The Kilauea Ocean Entry area will be open tonight, conditions willing. They were open last night with marginal wind direction and had to close early and evacuate (7:30) because the plume drifted over the trail. I was there and really have a great deal of respect for the County workers. My face was burning after leaving and I don't have to expose myself to it every night like they do. The conditions last night: No surface flow on the Pali or the flow field. The Ocean Entry had a good glow and occaisional splatter/explosions after dark. Beautiful blue/long night moon. Hey, do you think there was enough activity to make it interesting to check out? We've been there several times of course, but my daughter's boyfriend has never even seen a lava field, so he may like it anyway. Carrie "The world is changed. I feel it in the water. Galadriel - LOTR RE: Lava Viewing - Open On New Years?? - dakine - 01-01-2010 quote: considering that kilauea is currently in an extended deflation event (3 days now), it's possible that unless there is a rapid re-occupation of the rift plumbing system within the next few hours that there will be little to no activity down at the coast this evening. you might want to keep an eye on http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update/deformation.html and when you see the electronic tiltmeter plot indicate inflation (when the plot line begins to rise) at POC (blue line) you can figure it will be a few more hours after that when the activity at the coast will pick up (assuming the tube system that carries the lava from puu oo to the coast remains intact) though like you observed, for the uninitiated even a little glow can go a long way, so going down just to pass the time could be fun regardless RE: Lava Viewing - Open On New Years?? - robguz - 01-01-2010 I was there last night. The view from the viewing area wasn't very exciting. Some red glow and a smallish plume. The entry is so far away from the viewing area now and often faces the other direction on the new delta. For someone that has never seen anything like it, it's probably worth it. RE: Lava Viewing - Open On New Years?? - Greg - 01-01-2010 Carrie, I wish I could respond to your request for information. It's kind of like the surf report though; No matter what's forcasted, you just have to go down and look for a definative answer. The deflation event that dakine mentions is showing much lower on the tiltmeter graph than it's been since I can remember;(-4.5 as of now). It usually starts inflating back up at zero and this event is still plumeting. You may want to check it tonight before it stops altogether. In any case, the moon will be sparkling on the ocean.[] Stoneface RE: Lava Viewing - Open On New Years?? - Chuysmom - 01-01-2010 Thanks again! We went down just before dusk...it was nice. There was a large red glow with a few explosions and MANY visitors to watch it. I too have seen it more exciting, but even seeing the lava flow field in the daylight was cool for someone that has never seen lava! Carrie "The world is changed. I feel it in the water. Galadriel - LOTR RE: Lava Viewing - Open On New Years?? - mella l - 01-02-2010 And Greg, Was the moon Blue while sparkeling? mella l "New York London Paris Hilo" RE: Lava Viewing - Open On New Years?? - Greg - 01-03-2010 Mella, To answer your question; The moon was not blue, but yellow, while it sparkled. It did, however, seem much smaller than I would have thought. See here ______________________________________________________________________ New lava update: The deflation event seems to have bottomed out. There has been kind of a spike at the Halema'uma'u tiltmeter, but the Pu'u O'o meter is staying level. The Ocean entry has sputtered to pretty much nothing and there is lots of vog in the area. I would suggest waiting for better conditions. Stoneface RE: Lava Viewing - Open On New Years?? - Carey - 01-03-2010 Mella, KFVE tv news had a really cool photo of the moon on New years eve during the weather. The sky around the moon was a deep blue, and the moon had a blue hue, totally awesome, but I couldn't find it on their web page... |
