How is it in Puna? Hilo is shrouded in gray, so is north of Hilo. Waikoloa and Kawaihae are choke and choking people. Civil defense put out an island wide air advisory today through Thursday, with special cautions for the summit area.

Hilo is worse than Papa'ikou and I went into town just now and felt ill.

Bear and I drove over the Saddle to Kona today, and the vog was the about the worst we have ever seen. Mauna Loa was surrounded by a thick blanket of smudgy haze. The only relief seemed to be some upslope showers on parts of the Kona side, but that was limited. It was so bad around Pohakuloa that our eyes burned and the smell was quite sharp.

Down here, mid Opihikao Road, about 500 feet elevation, been yucky for two days now. Can't see the water about three miles away. It is just bearable.
What I do not appreciate is that it is very hard to find news about it. Maybe they do not want to spread the word that the Hawaii is not such a paradise since it will get published next to an Obama article. :^)

Yes, I too wonder why vog seems to be a well kept secret here. The Oahuians whine about it in Honolulu, but it is well diluted by the time it gets there. We, in Puna are within 15 miles of the origin & the SO2 must be dangerously concentrated. I feel like this will have serious consequences in the future especially for the people in Pahala. They are directly downwind (during trade winds) & levels there are quite high. I feel bad for the children. The news reported Hawaii has the second highest level of asthma in the nation hmmm - wonder why? [
] After being here 5 years, I notice it's worse in Winter, is this true? This latest vog run has made me seriously consider moving elsewhere. Anyone else think this is more serious than reported? Below are some monitoring sites I check:

if you have a law that says that parents are required to send their kids to school
and a school that is situated in an unhealthy environment
and you continue to have the school open
and attendance mandatory
then I suspect you would be condoning the exposure of the community to unhealthy conditions
if later you said those conditions are unhealthy
you'd have to close the schools.. hospitals.. etc.,
and face possible mounds of litigation over all sorts of stuff..
so it's probably a whole lot smarter to just shut up!
at least it looks like that's how our local government figures it
sheesh they love their taxes.. and god knows they are more sacred than anything else, including the health and welfare of the community that pays 'em. so whereas when the new vent at the summit of kilauea opened up they had all sorts of things going on.. road blocks, park closures etc., and now it's just another vog day.. no biggie right?

In lower HPP, haze in the early morn.
Kona winds kicking up stronger this afternoon.
I, personally, don't notice so much impact on air quality for breathing. Do notice a bit of eye irritation, but that could be dust from the dry and wind.

Early this morning we had a red sunrise... indicating vog. By 10 am the trades were back and there is nothing but bright blue skies now, but as I look south to Puna, it still looks pretty hazy.

The winds all day have been from a southerly direction, not trades. Trade winds are always from the Northeast in Hawaii. Although ANY wind is better than none for moving the vog away. The weather guessers are predicting the trades will come back on Wed or Thurs but only for a day. I think it's a great time to take a trip to South Point or Punalu'u Beach where it's unusually clear.
