Shipping containers? - Jonathan - 01-06-2010

We are looking for a truck driver that can deliver and drop a 40ft loaded container to puna? Hopeing that it is possible,so we can purchase our own container. Not wanting to unload in hury. Also looking for someone to split 2 or 3 3acre lots in fern forest. The lots are long and skinny.Splitting in half would give width, privecy and no back intrance to your property.Or if anybodys got 3 acres or more for 15k to 20k? Looking for land to farmstead and off grid it. Any wisdom would be apreciated. Thanks Jonathan

Heya Jonathan,

With the dollar amount you've cited; have you considered getting your own parcel? There's plenty to be had in that price range and most of these parcels are not sub dividable.
Go to Aloha living and do a map search under the property search tab in the Puna area. Set your criteria to "vacant land" on the map browser.

Check out around Orchid land estates for 3 acre parcels in that price range.

Rob,
Can Conen's Freight ground a 20' container? ie... Do they use or have a dump type bed or are they strictly limited to fork lift/crane grounding?

Best to call them and ask.

Ken's Towing in Kurtistown has delivered and set down both of my containers over two years. THey have a crane & can set it down gentle as can be - also with incredible accuracy. Both times they were less than half my quote from Conen's. They got my very full/heavy 20' when it arrived in Hilo & later delivered my empty 40. I'm certain they can handle a full 40. They're also close to Hawaiian Acres so you won't pay for a lot of 'road time' while the truck and crane are driving to/from your lot.

I highly recommend them. THeir number is 808.966.9376

I've also dealt with Conen's to bring a container over from Kona side. They were great too. THe reason I love Kens is the price, the crane, Ken and his crew [Wink]

Just be sure to check with the shipper about regulations they have about the container if you are purchasing one to ship.I know that there are some special inspections that are required.

"Spaghetti" lots can be "Consolidated and Resubdivided". Take 2 lots and create a double wide "flag lot" in the rear with a 30' strip down the side for a driveway to access the rear lot. Off grid is good for the rear lot because moving electricity that far is problematic. Front lot would be a bit deeper and 30' narrower than a double lot.
I have done it. Takes about a year and $3-4K.

Dan

P.S. Come and live here awhile before you buy!

We purchased a 20' shipping container in early December 2009 to ship some belongings around Christmas to the Big Island. We were told by the company where we purchased the shipping container that we had to get a seaworthy certificate (I think that's what it was called), even though the shipping container had only been used once. I seem to recall that the certificate cost around $50 or so. I don't recall having to jump through any other hoops to ship our container. The companies we dealt with in Seattle were very helpful in regards to how we needed to fill out the Bill of Lading and such.
