Metal roofing type and source - TheYogi - 01-25-2010 The time has come for us to purchase some good metal roofing. What I'm looking for is: 1. Quality metal roofing that won't rust in 3 years. 2. No coating that would render our rain catchment undrinkable. 3. Decent price. What type of roofing should I look for and what is a good source for it? Thank you! RE: Metal roofing type and source - Obie - 01-25-2010 My home has corrugated aluminum roofing that is 35 years old and is still in good condition. The original nails had to be removed and replaced with screws. When I added a roof over my lanai last year I used the same material and it was available from HPM in Shipman. You do have to put up with the silver color. It does reflect the sun nicely though. RE: Metal roofing type and source - bjbTay - 01-26-2010 The Yogi, We are going to be building, so your question about rust has me investigating further the quality of the Kynar finish, which is used extensively now on metal roofing and siding. It appears that this finish holds up the best in wet-humid climates, and http://www.custommetalroofing.us/matfinish.htm says it is guaranteed for 20 years. I am unable to access their specification page to make sure it is the Kynar 500 PVDF. Maybe their PDF specs page will open for you. I have sent an email to them requesting this information, I will let you know what I discover. There is a lot of information on the web with regards to the quality of Kynar 500 PVDF (polyvinylidene Flouride), here’s one: http://arkemaus.com/pdf/techpoly/kurt%20paper.pdf We will be doing a well, so the catchment issue will not effect us, but obviously you will want to investigate this further. The two local sources that I know of are Custom Metal Roofing 966-5660 and Aloha 966-7788, both in Keaau, and both use Kynar + cool roof finish, but like I said we need to confirm it is Kynar 500 PVDF. Hope this is helpful. Barbara Taylor Hawaii Dreaming RE: Metal roofing type and source - bjbTay - 01-26-2010 I just had another thought I would like to share with you regarding aluminum as a building material for a considerablly large area of ones house. I would think it is not a good material to use on your roof in conjunction with drinking water. As we all know the toxicity of aluminum when using it to cook food (ie. pots and pans). I am also one who approaches life holisticly. In addition to toxicity there is another element to aluminum. This understanding may seem strange to you, but simply put, everything in this physical world has a vibrational frequency to it, and my understanding tells me that the frequency of aluminum is not compatible with the bodies frequency. Call me crazy...if you like, this is just my two cents. Barbara Taylor Hawaii Dreaming RE: Metal roofing type and source - TheYogi - 01-26-2010 Thank you both. And Barbara, I look forward to hearing more about what you uncover. Thank you RE: Metal roofing type and source - Obie - 01-26-2010 I have never bought into that rumor about cooking in aluminum pans. http://www.snopes.com/movies/actors/valentino.asp We were talking about roofing and a corrugated aluminum roof can last 35 or more years with minimum maintenance. RE: Metal roofing type and source - tada - 01-26-2010 Does kynar adhere to aluminum. Otherwise what is the maintanence for aluminum to prevent corrosion? Other people want to make friends- I just want to make money. James Cramer RE: Metal roofing type and source - Obie - 01-26-2010 Aluminum starts to corrode and then creates an oxide on it's surface. The thin coating of oxide protects the metal. Properly installed and maintained aluminum roofs will last nearly forever. RE: Metal roofing type and source - tada - 01-27-2010 How do you get the corrosion to stop at the surface? I have seen aluminum roofing crumbling at the edges holes bored thru. Other people want to make friends- I just want to make money. James Cramer RE: Metal roofing type and source - tada - 01-28-2010 ok I finally did the search. The points I came up with salt is the worst thing for aluminum and it withstands acidic conditions better than basic. So if vog is acidic maybe that's why the roof still looks good as well as not planting thhe tree right next to the house! Other people want to make friends- I just want to make money. James Cramer |
