Trash burning - LEROY - 01-31-2010

Someone in my neighborhood is burning trash(Hawaiian beaches)in the drought we have i don't think this is a good idea. When i went to confirm it was trash and not a cookout, the people told me to call the police. When i did call the police they told me not to bother unless this is a real emergency. I thought this was illegal to do this in town? Maybe when the neighborhood burns down somebody will come. [Sad][Sad]

Please explain....

Are you actually looking for enforcement of laws and ordinances?

I do believe you are correct though. When the neighborhood starts to burn the fire department and
police will come.

Rob i am looking to have someone with higher authority to tell these people that what their doing is wrong where they are doing this. Not only does it smell bad but it is dangerous. This is not the first time this is happened. These people have no regard how other neighbors will feel. I do not usually call the police, in this case i felt it was necessary. SADLY the police have let me down. To me i fell they should have at least came and asked questions. I guess they are to busy giving tickets to people on the phone when thy are driving.[Big Grin]

If it is a true trash fire, then they probably have it in a burn barrel and are watching it. That shouldn't be a problem if it is done correctly. I don't know the legality of it, but it is frequently done.

I wonder if calling the fire department (non-emergency line, of course) would yield better results?
Do they do that in these parts?? The fire chief would've come out & given them a stern talking-to back in our hometown, but things are different here, as we all know...

Leroy, Before you launch into a crusade to tell these people that burning trash is wrong you should first confirm any ordinances that may sustain this opinion. The burden is on you for that. There are a lot of activities that can be considered "grandfathered" and are accepted despite current codes. Real true negligent fire hazards are indeed worthy of attention though.

Rural areas have been burning trash at home for millenia. In my neighborhood the smoke was mostly from ufuros and there is no way in hell I am going to complain to a local elder about the smoke. I just accept it as a local custom and hope their house doesn't burn down. I moved here to experience the here. Sometimes that includes smoke or screeching tires or whatever.

I should have said on my post before that there is no barrel. The trash is on the ground nobody watching. lots of ash blowing around,i have also seen them burn tires. I don't want to give any specific street right now.[Sad!][Sad!]

RE: Trash burning - Liz - 01-31-2010

Yeah, a burn barrel makes sense & is much safer... we used to do that back on the farm, but I have seen some neighbors here burn their trash in an open fire, too. Usually the area surrounding the fire is cleared though, so that helps a bit. It's the fire danger that would worry me most.

edited to add: Burning tires is not only smelly but dangerous. Ick.

The Heath dept has a ban on burning ( except for cooking or bathing use )

Don't worry Leroy, its against the Law, unless you are cooking. Call the fire Dept next time.
