stolen doublecab recovered - lquade - 03-10-2010

[Big Grin]for all the good wishes, our stolen doublecab was returned to us, pretty much intact. a group of local guys convinced someone to return it to us. we had really given up, it is currently a sloppy ghostly white, but ron is going to restore it to its former glory. thank you punawebbers for looking.

Very glad to hear you have it home.

That is great to hear.I can't imagine why someone would steal such a rare vehicle.Kind of hard to hide it on an island and can't ship it without a title.

RE: stolen doublecab recovered - Greg - 03-10-2010

My friend had his small SUV stolen from his property awhile ago. It was spotted in a Pahoa parking lot and he stole it back.

The lolo who was driving it must have known it was stolen, he bought it from a nephew with no papers, the door and ignition jimmied, VIN removed, and a quickie paint job. This guy didn't have a clue that it was the owner that took it back so he filed a police report,[Big Grin] and put a notice on Craigs list with his name and phone number!

My friend took it to the police with the papers, and ID'd it through aftermarket part reciepts, and the cops said "OK, take em home".

The cops then called the lolo and asked him about his police report, and why the SUV had tags from one of his nephews cars.

The lolo ratted out his nephew and the nephew was arrested for theft. The vehicle was pretty trashed, but there can be some justice when the thieves are so clueless.

Arm pumping ... YES !!!!!

Was just wondering about this.

So stoked for you guys ... Lemme know if you need help on taking off the cheap paint ... Might be able to get it off EZ WITHOUT messing up the old.

Long storry short ... Years ago I had everything I owned packed in my 66 convertable, ready to move the next morning ... Walked out the next day with my cat, a sleeping bag and a paycheck in my pocket only to find the car gone ... Got it back a couple weeks later not too messed up ... but with the guys old clothes ( underware included ) still in the back seat ... we must have been the same size.

Hope they took care of the motor/trans and did not do too much damage ...

Please let us know the story if there is one : )

aloha,
pog

Glad to hear you got it back! How did they return it to you, an anonymous phone call?

Great story, Greg!

RE: stolen doublecab recovered - lquade - 03-10-2010

story: we heard NOTHING from police or airport security since reported Feb 17th. we got an anonymous call late one night. we meet this local guy who shows us the house. we call police 4 cars arrive. you cant see anything from the road but another vw van rusted out hulk . police say they would need a search warrant and tell us to go home it might take a day or 2 for a judge to sign. we head back to mt. view and in route get a call from a friend who is local who also knew my dad (local boy). said to turn around and go back to the house. when we get there, lot of local guys smiling standing around and there is our car, pretty much put back together, bumper, lites etc. in the back to be put back on, spray painted white like from a can. everyone is smiling and shaking our hands although i knew none of them, anyway we call a tow truck and take him home. no questions from police, this one we didnt have to prove was ours there is only 1 other like it on island. so like greg we got him back havent heard anymore from the police. pog i dont think he was driven at all, except from the airport. it was apart, on blocks, all the lites, bumpers, plates, vin removed.

It is a kind of happy end.
But would the police follow up or "the case is closed"?
If it is,the message for thieves would be "we can always return staff when we are about to be caught. Thanks to 2 days waiting for the warrant!"

RE: stolen doublecab recovered - JerryCarr - 03-10-2010

I'm happy that you got the truck back, but what about consequences? Your property was damaged, with considerable reassembly and painting required. You also lost use of it, along with getting a good dose of emotional distress. One would hope that the people responsible would be charged with auto theft, damage to property, tampering with a VIN, and running a criminal enterprise. Just because some good old local boys stood around smiling and shaking hands does not make everything all right. Is that the end of the story? If so, I don't believe justice was done, but I remain happy that you at least got it back.
