Coconut Palm butchers - Rob Tucker - 02-06-2010
Apparently, based on this letter to the editor in the Trib, some idiots are going around cutting down coconut palms to harvest the coconuts with out the hassle of climbing them.

A few years back some dummies were cutting down mature mango trees for the same selfish purpose.
Keep on the look out folks and take pictures, license numbers and descriptions if you observe anyone on the side of the road engaged in such brutal theivery.

That is crazy, like the idiots that cut down the big old Longon Tree at UHH a few months ago. We just had coconut boy come to our house
(http://bit.ly/coconut-boy ) and he left with over 50 nuts, some of them bigger than basketballs. We kept about 10 and shared a few.

Has anybody actually seen this? Sounds like a possible urban legend.
If I walk along the shore I can pick up more coconuts than I could possibly need,
why would someone bother chopping down the tree? I'm not saying it's not true, but
where's the evidence?
Although, a few years ago I did see a coconut tree that was half chopped down
(they got halfway through the trunk) and next to it was the cardboard sheath of
a brand new machette from Ace Hardware. I could only imagine it was a tourist
pursuing some bizarre fantasy before someone told them to stop.

OK, Here's a slightly off topic, but not really, kind of funny true story of kalapana legend:
Back in the early nineties, a couple of Puna Nurserymen got an order from Maui for several hundred sprouted Coconuts, at $3 ea.
They parked their truck (full of beer) at the shoreline near Left Point, and offered the local beachhangers "one beer fo one coconut wit sprout".
What a sight! People emerging from the bush with an armload of sprouted nuts, then staggering back to search for more. The pick up was overloaded within a couple of hours; The guys made a couple of bucks profit on each coconut, and never left their truck.
