Thanks for posting this, Andrew.
It's really wonderful what they're doing up there.

Plus the ride is out of this world!
Wish I was gonna be around this weekend.
It's been ages since I've been up there.

I haven't been reading this forum long enough to know if anyone's ever posted this link in the past, but the local Sierra Club folks (the Moku Loa group) conducts heaps of interesting outings (and service projects) as well:

Anyhow, have fun if you go.
We expect a full report!

I went last year, it's beautifull and if you're into birds its priceless, though the hundreds of people tramping around make it a little-less than perfect. That general area is accessible 24-7, i would encourage anyone to go if for nothing else than to learn more about our island's geography, fauna, and biomes. It is a well-staffed and informative event.

The refuge itself is not opened to the public 24/7. It's only opened one day a year, the Open House day. The general area around it is accessible, but it's not the same as within the pig- and bovine-exclusion fence that surrounds the forest. The fence is one of the reasons that this forest is healthy and is a haven for so many native forest birds. Access is very limited because there are research projects going on and ongoing habitat restoration within. It is a good way to see a bit of native Hawaiian rain forest in as close to pristine condition as possible.

Here's some more information. The guides at HF&T know everything about the guided tours they offer.

We went out with Andrew a few years back when he photographed this area for this website.

We did not go on the tour per se but the portion we followed was information packed about everything and the avid bird watcher folks were overjoyed to be there.

"I'll take the path of least resistance...thanks anyway."
