REAL Class recruiting 5th graders again - knieft - 03-24-2010
REAL Class is an accelerated program for students on or above grade level in all subjects. It is one of many fine programs at Hawaii Academy of Arts & Science Public Charter School. Admission is competitive.
Each year we start a new class of 20 fifth graders, and are now looking for applicants for the next school year (2010/11). I will be the teacher.
We rely mostly on word of mouth, so if any folks here know of anyone with a bright (often bored) child who is currently in 4th grade, please consider sending them to our website for details.

This sounds grand. It is like a gifted and talented education programs of the past where the students receive accelerated challenges for the mental stimulation?

But even more so, since this is a fully self-contained class. Most G/T programs are of a pull-out nature.
Not all of our students would be considered G/T (90+ percentile), but because we are self-contained, and we don't need to do any remediation to speak of, we can really offer a classroom where bright kids can find their own "ceiling".
A few of our 6th graders regularly complete Algebra 1 (through the quadratic equation) pretty much independently. It is very rewarding to see kids rise to their potential on a daily basis...

We have only been graduating students for three years so far, but well over 90% have gone on to the HAAS 7-12 campus. There is an "honors" program, AP classes, and "Running Start" where students get high school and college credits for classes at the Community College.

Where is the HAAS 7-12 campus. I have a 7th grader who was in GT and now in the honors program. He just scored 100% on the bench mark tracker. It was funny the principal called him in his office. He thought he was in trouble. Anyway he almost never has homework if he does in math he finishes it in 5 min. He never seems challenged. I would love to find out more about the HAAS 7-12 campus.

The main HAAS campus is on the post office road across 130 towards the ocean. The lottery has already been conducted for the next school year however. Tthere is a significant waiting list. The HAAS website is...
