Looking for recommendations - Cindy LPG - 03-25-2010
Aloha, future neighbors. My husband and I are buying a vacation home in Leilani Estates, in which we hope to spend a lot of time. We need to get an internet connection, and also homeowners' insurance (including lava; we're in Zone 1). I have looked online at ISPs and it seems like there are a lot, but I'd love to know who you guys like and dislike. We don't need cable service, just internet. Mahalo for your help.

I will have to disappoint you, while there are ISP choices, a large part of Leilani Estates is still on dial-up! Roadrunner is available in some areas of the upper part, but no DSL. There are wireless options though.
You have two choices for insurance, HPIA or Lloyd's. E-mail me privately for the contact info of my insurance agent. Where did you buy?

WRT internet service, if you do not want cable that provides Roadrunner, then your only other choice is DSL with Hawaiian Tel. A year ago there was a wait list for Leilani estates. Being at the end of the line, it is the slowest DSL I have ever experienced but far better than dial-up. For Insurance you really do not have a choice but to go with HPIA for less than $350,000 or Lloyd's for over $350,000. They both charge an arm and a leg and are available through any local Insurance Broker. Interesting aspect with HPIA is that they do not cover losses due to earth movement. They have not responded to letters asking for clarification if lava flows are considered earth movement but in my judgement a lava flow is earth movement. If you are financing, then you will need Hurricane Insurance. Because of the outragous cost, most people without financing are just self insured.

IF you can qualify for dsl, and get an actual port, you CAN use any of the local ISPs (not just hitel i.e. lava.net etc) however none of them can provide you over 3mb and it will cost you atleast 35/month MORE than if you jut got dsl direct from hitel. roadrunner is the fastest residential local service if you can get it.

We are in lower Leilani and have DSL so it is available.

Thanks Andrew, it's good to know! I guess things have changed since I checked the last time, we couldn't get DSL or Roadrunner on Makamae.

Our neighbors in Orchidland have been trying to get DSL for years...they call almost every week, and are told the same thing: No ports available...

How does one qualify for DSL? Does it have anything to do with living within 50,000 feet of the proper connecting equipment? Curious.

It was only the last few years some of our subdivision has had digital cable, thus Roadrunner internet. Before that, I used an air card. Since then, while we have Roadrunner here and at the office, for those times when I have my laptop and no access, I bring my own internet via my Verizon connection. It is only 3g but still faster than dial up used to be. It is seldom necessary to use it but is handy. The problem with such internet providers ... you have to have 'cell' service available. When I visit my sister in a very rural part of Massachusetts I have to depend on my verizon internet USB..she has 'iffy' cell coverage but most of the time it works. I told her I thought it amusing that I live in rural RURAL Hawaii 2500 miles from the nearest land and have cable internet and she lives in progressive Massachusetts and has 'iffy' cell coverage. I understand her cable company is finally upgrading...
Leilani is a beautiful community. Lots of really neat people live there. I wish you the best in your new vacation home. There are a lot of us here who decided to 'leave on a jet plane and don't know when we'll back again!'

mella, you need to live in an area where DSL is provisioned (and yes, there are geographic considerations - you need to be a certain distance from the provider's DSL equipment), but the provider also has to have available ports to serve you.
It's like my home office...it has electrical service, but I've maxed out all the outlets. Yes, I have power in there, but I can't plug in any new stuff. Fortunately, one of the outlets is dedicated to my DSL router
(which both I and my WiFi-sharing neighbor are very appreciative of...)
