Where is the best place to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables on the East side?

It depends on the time of week you feel like shopping for them. You've got Makuu on Sunday, Hilo Farmer's Market Wednesday & Saturday, and Keaau every day. (In reality, Hilo Farmer's is open everyday, with Wednesday & Saturday having much more to offer). There's also a tiny farmer's market in Pahoa on Sundays.

In our case, we prefer Hilo & Makuu markets, and go to Keaau when we need something and the other two aren't open.

Even better, many times our neighbors will give us their extras (of course, we also give out our extras)

Many times, at work, school, church, even at community meetings, someone will have brought their extra crops. So much produce is given to us that rarely do I even buy any produce except for the lettuce base for salads, carrots & apples (still cannot resist a good looking apple....)
Added plus, I have broaden my produce eating to many items that I never had even heard of, much less thought of, eating

I barked at my local Trader Joe's for not buying their papayas from Hawaii. They get theirs from Brazil. About $3 each. I get sad when I drive down the road to Kapoho and see the many dying groves there.

I must speak up for the Pahoa farmers market on Sunday mornings. Papaya, the best lettuce I have ever had in life for $3 a bag includes 3-6 varities, the lady from volcano has wonderful tomatoes, always cucumbers, sometimes beets or radishes. One of the best perks of living in East Hawaii has to be the produce. I feel sad when I see people buying these same things in the supermarket for many times the cost. Do they have any idea what they are missing?

Julie, we also will hit the Pahoa market on a lazy Sunday when we don't want to get sucked into looking at everything at Maku'u!

It's hard to resist spending a couple of hours at the Sunday market...so much to see.

Hey Tony, from time to time you can get solo papayas from Hilo (wrapped in the Hilo Tribune!) at Your DeKalb Farmers Market on Ponce. This weekend they only had the crappy jumbo Brazilian ones. Sometimes Whole Foods & even on occasion Publix has solo papayas for around 2.69 each - not from Hawaii, usually from S. America. They certainly don't taste as good as Hawaiian papayas but close enough for now.

Buy local, 10 pounds for $50, including shipping.
