Saddle Road - macuu222 - 04-26-2010

Anyone notice that they paved, put in center lines and filled in the shoulder area on the worst part that remained of Saddle Road on the Kona side? It's soooo much better than before.

Fun to drive ... But watch out for that gravel that might be kicked all over the road. Hope they seal or finish that.

aloha,
pog

Good point Pog.
They should have used dirt from the area and let the veg grow on it.
I've been up there at night in the rain with loose stones all over the curves.
You would think it would have been much cheaper to have one of the ranchers kick in some dirt, eh?

If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see what it cost when it’s free...now here come the taxes.....

Spun out a Datsun roadster and went over an embankment BACKWARDS as a result of gravel like that.

O.k. was a crazy teenage driver but was not driving 10 /10ths either ... Road was clear the day before and found out later a truck had spilled part of its load on the same curve.

Point is, that stuff seems benign 'till one has to stop quick heading down the hill or swerve to avoid a Nene, cow or goat trying to not be sold.

Then its like a bannana peel / ball bearings under the tires.

The County is attempting to secure federal funding to resurface the last five miles of Saddle Road (from m.m 49 to m.m 54) also.

We're grateful for the straight shoot! It's nice. Although we still don't visit the other side often enough...maybe this will encourage us.

I travel to the other side once every month using Saddle Road. I save over $200.00 ( and that's "after" subtracting the cost of gas) every month on groceries and pet food by shopping in Kona rather than Hilo. More stores...more competition...lower prices. The airfares are also much lower leaving from Kona than Hilo which is another reason I drive over there frequently. I fly alot... Kona has 6 major airlines servicing the mainland and Japan.

RE: Saddle Road - Chuysmom - 04-27-2010

macuu, do you go to costco? Where do you go when you shop over there that can save so much? Hopefully Target will add enough competition that other stores here will fall in line.

Carrie

Edit: Actually, they won't make a groceries difference obviously.

We also do the Costco run every month or two and save enough money to make the trip more than worthwhile. And, talk about a good deal on lunch....$1.50 for the big hot dog or sausage and a soda.

I think Target over here WILL make a difference. If it is anything like the one in Kona, there will be a large food section, similar to the one in Walmart. Of course, no fresh produce...but I try to buy that at the farmer's markets anyway.

The new Saddle Road is making this Costco outing quite an enjoyable ride rather than a white knuckle experience.

RE: Saddle Road - Funkstopper - 04-27-2010

I love every inch of the drive on the saddle road. Although as a passenger I can get a bit sick. Coming up through the clouds of a rain forest into dark foreboding lava fields with ancient looking stunted ohia trees. then bursting into sunshine with the two most massive mountains on the planet. Every time I make the drive the scenery seems new to me and fills me with awe.
One day word will get out and it will be the drive every tourist visiting the Big Island will want to drive. Then after getting stuck behind a gaggle of rubberneckers we might look back nostalgically on the old seldom traveled road that was off limits to rental cars.

The funk stops here!
