Aloha,
I was told that an accident happened on Kahakai Sunday about 7:00 p.m. and that some people were killed and injured, dose anyone know for sure? [?]

Never heard anything Tom and we live down this way...hmmm. It's a common thing anymore. A 17 year-old got killed at the curve by Keonipoko and it's nice to see the FINALLY put the high profile reflectors and painted the lines...very sad situation.

This morning while in Hilo I was told by someone who has family in Hawaiian Beaches that a car was speeding down Kahakai and rolled several times. Jaws of life used.
I think he said traveling just makai of Puni Makai (?).

We live on Malolo just mauka of Puni Makai and were sitting down to dinner Sunday just before 7pm when I heard the car and then an instant thud and no more car engine noise. I said uh oh wreck. Never heard anything more...no sirens...nothing. Sure sounded to me like a car crash to me.

Just checked the Hawaii Police website. There's no news release about a crash on Kahakai.

I saw some clean up taking place when I returned home about 8:30. Lots of debris. A friend of a friend who was looking on at the aftermath says it was pretty bad. He said it looked like two cars were racing and one lost control and flipped several times. The guy was pulled out of the wreckage alive but lost his legs, one eye,and damage to his lungs.

Every night around 10-ish we hear cars racing MAJOR down Kahakai...It's so regular you'd think the cops would just hang out around that time once in a while and nail them.
I'm sure they have more important things to do than lay in wait for teenagers playing chicken.

P.S. Having said that, it's very sad that someone was so injured...young people tend to live in the moment and invite the rush.

From talking to the police (at HPP Neighborhood watch) I got the impression that they're very keen to hear about crime that's fixed to a certain time and place. They can't do much about things that can happen at any time (eg ATVs) but if they can lay in wait it's an easy job for them.
Each time you hear them racing, report it on the non-emergency number of 935-3311 and they will send someone eventually.
Can't hurt.
