Cheap Kauai accommodations? - robguz - 06-16-2010

Anyone have any recommendations for cheap places to stay on Kauai, sort of on the order of the Kona Seaside, Islander Inn, Monago Hotel--basic, cheap, kama'aina rates, don't necessarily cater to tourists. Did I mention cheap? Basically looking for a step above camping for a couple nights, as is our current plan for travel next month. I know I can scour the internet, but I'm thinking some personal recommendations will be more reliable and obvious. Thanks.

I found a great, cheap ($35) place to stay on Molokai on Craig's list. Also, don't know if you heard, they are closing the Kalalau Trail temporarily for landslide work, don't know the particulars.

Depending on what part of the island you want to stay at. Princeville and Poipu are more expensive. We stayed in Kapaa last month. Aston @ Makaiwa Beach has a kamaina special of $80/night. It includes an automatic upgrade in room category.

Aston Islander in Kapa'a as well. Condotel property but I think they're all furnished mostly alike if they're in the hotel rental pool. All the Astons have the excellent Kama'aina discount that John mentioned.

The Kalalau Trail is being closed for rockfall remediation this fall. It's going to stay open as far as Hanakapi'ai falls and beach.

Try the YMCA on the North Shore out past Hanalei Bay.

It is at the corner of Highway 560 and Alealea rd. If they are not hosting a group, they take outside reservations.

Just spoke to them, and they are booked till September, but I will throw this out anyway since it is such a great place.

Here is a link to the map. It is the large grassy area on the corner. Nice place. Backs up right to the Beach. We camped in our bus, and it was $15/person. Same price to camp in a tent or use one of the bunkhouses.

Has bathrooms, Hot shower, and if you have a big group, you can rent the huge kitchen and dining area for $75 a day.

Rooms at kama'aina rate start at about $60 a night, friends who stayed here said it was OK, on par with the places you mentioned. Have fun!

A couple years back we stayed at Ivy's Cottage Bed & Breakfast. Got a nice studio for $60.00/night. Small kitchen but clean and comfy. It is North of Hanalei, a few miles from the end of the road and Ke'e Beach. Great place, would definitely return if you wanted to stay on that part of the island. We put on nearly 1000 miles in 10 days driving back & forth and around. Ask if you can just rent the third bedroom. That was the studio. Here is their website. ivysplace.com

Thanks everyone! These are great, probably going with Carol's suggestion. What a deal!
