Help Identifying a Chicken (Photo) - Andrew - 05-13-2010
Aloha Chicken Lovers:
A rooster and hen have decided to move into our yard and that's fine by me. Can anyone tell me anything about this chicken? What kind? Are the eggs any good? Is it juvenile? Any other helpful info would be appreciated.

could be a mix australop (sp). you are going to get brown eggs and they will probably be pretty tasty if you give them some layer pellets and dont expect them to produce well just on free range....[

The Rooster looks like a Rhode Island Red. Pretty pair.

The male is Rhode Island Red. I used to have one and they are charming. Such personalities. And they do watch out for their ladies. In all the good ways. Mine used to only crow when either I got up in the morning ("hey, I'd like some food now") or when I got home ("hey, some food now would be great"). I never said he had a wide vocabulary, but he expressed himself well. And every night, he would round up the ladies and get everyone into the coop and position himself as guard over them all night. Of course, as the only male, there were benefits but he took his responsibility to watch over the ladies and the babies very seriously.

I was thinking it could be an Araucana, but I haven't seen one that dark. Any eggs yet? Which reminds me, anyone ever had an Araucana that laid the alleged violet eggs?

Thanks guys for your interesting responses. Eggs? No. At this point they still run wild around my place. But as John mentioned they do show up for their regular feeding sessions. The rooster trumpets his arrival and I feed them their treats. So far that is it.
