Helicopter surveillance/harassment - Dave Smith - 07-15-2010
Has anyone else noted low-flying helicopter surveillance lately? It's been going on for the past two days in my part of Orchidland.
A dark gray (too dark to observe any numbering), fairly heavy-duty, rotorless-boom chopper has been doing low circles around my neighborhood, including some just now over the lot behind ours at certainly no more than 250 feet above the ground. Yesterday afternoon it was doing the same thing on the other side of our road.
I work from home and find this intrusion extremely distracting and a major nuisance. It's so low and loud it's also driving our dogs nuts.
It doesn't look military, but I'm not up on that. Perhaps the DEA has a new chopper on the island?

Yea it was buzzing in Ainaloa too. I was outside drinking beer eating calamansi when they buzzed over me. Maybe they were spot checking? Green Harvest? Stolen cars? Junky houses? Who knows...
I wouldnt necessarily call them a "surveillance/harassment"?
Put it this way, out of 365 days a year, MAYBE 10-15 times they fly over your house? And 10-15 is pushing it. Do what I do. Go inside and grab another beer! Enjoy the day, its beautiful out. SHOOTZ!![8D]

Well, Sam, I'm glad it's not bothering your beer drinking. Work is another matter.
Thing is, I don't buy the quantitative argument. So I should be glad I'm not being harassed more?
I believe it's also a safety issue as I don't believe 250 feet is enough room to auto-gyrate should there be engine problems.

It amazes me that these helicopters are always so low and close that they are a major annoyance and yet no one can take a clear picture or get the N number.
I watch the tour copters going past my house ever day and can usually see the N number.Binoculars work for those that are farther away.

We have had a bunch of Helicopters the last 2 days (mostly going from SE to NW or Keaau HS up to Hwy 11...
Last night on the weather, the radar had a bunch of scatter, inc. over VNP... the announcer has stated that the scatter was from anti radar scatter that was a part of the Pac Rim exercises this week....
Even the road painting crew on our street was commenting on it this morning.... There were some really big fat dragonflies overhead!

I don't keep binoculars at hand, and my vision is monocorrected, so I sure can't read numbers on aircraft that show up and then leave. Usually they buzz over quickly.

When I said buzz over quickly, I didn't mean they leave. They can buzz back and forth. I just meant they are fast (around my house). It's disruptive to have a helicopter change a quiet day into noise central, but if it's not for you, I guess more power to you ... for others it's very disruptive. We're not all alike.
