Aloha,
I need recommendations for painters, tilers, and local cabinet makers.
Our home in Vacationland is coming along nicely. Joe Clark is an unbelievable framer and I hope to post pictures of his work soon.
Once Joe finishes, I'm either going to have to take some time off and paint the house myself(I like the idea..wife doesn't) or hire a painter. We are also considering tiling some of our floors and both bathroom showers. It's also time to order our kitchen cabinets, but I am open to the prospect of spending my $ locally if quality is good and price is reasonable. I appreciate your recommendations.

Too bad Bob & I are not planning a trip soon. You could hire him to do it and he could make it a working vacation while I sun at the beach all day! If you think of doing the tile yourself chat with him about it. He has done some beautiful custom work with marble, ceramic etc. Liza & I facebooked about trying to get together next week so you guys can chat about it then. He should be able to give you some pointers.
Wow, maybe your place will be a rental before our next trip ...........

If you are semi handy, tiling work is relatively straightforward (hey, if I can do it...it cannot be that complicated) If you have access to a wet saw the tile cutting is straight forward (only way you can go!). It will definitely let you know just how old you really are for the time you are tiling... but not hard labor type work...
For your shower, the prep work is oh, so important... one of the things we have learned while here is that the inspectors are not as diligent to proper prep for tiling a shower... there is a disconnect between the different inspectors that can allow things like normal floor drains in a shower, no pan or improperly prepared pans, even incorrect flow slopes.... so if you are tiling your own shower or hiring it, I would definitely make sure it is done properly....

Painters - Randall Tibbett 333-1333 - a licensed painting contractor but one man show. This is the only painter I will recommend.
(Tony is you are around the site, Randall might be working on our project today in Vacationland).
Note: I talked to Randall today and he said he is in some ballpark as other skilled painters.

Make sure your plumber sets the floor drains correctly. The tile guy gets blamed for this but it is the plumbers rough in issue as there is no extension for shower drains if they are set too low, although there is about a 2" threaded piece that you can adjust about 1 1/2".
And one other note from a earlier thread. DO NOT use left over hardy panel for backer board. It deflects, and wonder board (or whatever name cement board is being sold under) will not deflect and crack grout or tile.

I went to the Home Depot course, got to place a couple of practice tiles there. For cutting the tile, went to internet videos, my favorite was an ehow.com where the guy patiently did straight, diagonal and curve cuts.... after each video I went out and attacked some practice tiles (Tile Warehouse sells their bust up tiles for practice type prices)
I am using a basic HD wet saw (Pam LamOnt was the one who encouraged me, because I do have a phobia about working with high speed rotating disks... she had re-assured me that it is almost impossible to kill yourself with the wet saw)
My biggest suggestion to someone contemplating this: plan on spending a lot of time in the prep work & planning out the tiles. Allow much more time than you think it should take to actually do the tiling. If this needs to get done quickly or on a certain time fame, definitely go to the pros....
Started tiling with one small bath floor that had minimal cuts (2X2 tiles). Then tackled a bedroom floor with 16X16's by the end I had done my first mosaic... and now have finished 2 more bedrooms and a complete bath (walls, floors with a 6' roll-in handicap shower, all with mosaics (cutting mosaics is a way to be doing the project without having to kneel on the floor... again, the age thing...)
All of our house tiling is with porcelain, I have cut out mosaics for friends around the island in slate and ceramic, along with porcelain. I posted a month or so back with links to some of the tiling I have done...

He does beautiful work, and lives in Puna. We had him repair some counter edging and install travertine in our entry way. We were very pleased with everything.
