Red Flame Thrower Palms - Wao nahele kane - 09-01-2010 I’ve been to Rosettes etc already and placed requests for some Flame Thrower palms but have got no responses. I’m wondering if anyone on here might know where to buy a couple of them on island. It would be nice if they had a minimum 1 foot of trunk in height. I had several water melon crown shaft flamethrower palms I was growing on the mainland. Wish I could have brought them with me RE: Red Flame Thrower Palms - mailesomaha - 09-01-2010 craigslist, farm & garden: FLAME THROWER PALMS - $20 (Captain Cook) SPECTACULAR FLAME THROWER PALMS Chambeyronia Macrocarpa. But we bought alot. much luck to ya RE: Red Flame Thrower Palms - Wao nahele kane - 09-02-2010 mailesomaha, Thanks for the find on that one. Since posting this, I also found this site (not sure if it's been posted here before or not) with many rare exotics and they appear to be close by in Mountain View, HI. http://www.floribundapalms.com/index.lasso This is part of my list for now - Dypsis sp white Dypsis sp Orange Crush Marojejya darianii Areca vestiaria Chambeyronia macrocarpa How many flame thrower palms did you get and how are they doing today? Again... Mahalo E ho'a'o no i pau kuhihewa. RE: Red Flame Thrower Palms - Kapohocat - 09-02-2010 You might want to check here also: http://www.palmpedia.net/wiki/index.php/HAWAII_ISLAND_PALM_SOCIETY I know one of the growers is in Kapoho. RE: Red Flame Thrower Palms - mailesomaha - 09-02-2010 We got 35. We placed all our palms on the perimeter of our little acre and they look amazing. But everything was a shade of green. We threw them in between the others and they add a beautiful redish/purple eye-catching color to the vista. Here's the thing...we found that fertilizing them with miracle grow for roses (maybe another meant for blooming plants) kept the blush longer. Kind of extravagant but otherwise it doesn't really last. Of consideration may be to buy different heights like we did, then you have the sort of football game wave going on around the yard. Also, we live in a very rainy area, so we left them in their pots in the hottest part of the yard between 2 pieces of glass shower doors, very close together, for about 9 months so they could adjust to this environment and keep them away from our sheep. RE: Red Flame Thrower Palms - mailesomaha - 09-02-2010 Oops........ They all survived but 1 is very stumpy and kind of listless and I haven't figured out why. Maybe the weed wacker hits it too much? When their in bloom (k...just new shoots) the cardinals like to hang out on them...maybe they poop on the little one? I tried to find a rats nest or mold around the bottom...nothing. We've probably had them 5 years and the largest was about 2.5 feet and now...I don't know.....maybe 17 feet. Their really worth having, but not paying an outrageous price for because the blush only lasts a few weeks without a blooming fertilizer. RE: Red Flame Thrower Palms - Wao nahele kane - 09-03-2010 Kapohocat, Thanks for the additional link, I originally found Floribundapalms through Palmpedia but didn't think to add their link also. I did get confirmation that floribunda does have a Nursery located in Hawaiian Acres and it sounds to be by appointment only. Mailesomaha, Thanks for the heads up on the short period display of color on the Flame Thrower Palms and how to extend it. What's the average time between new leaf displays? RE: Red Flame Thrower Palms - JerryCarr - 09-03-2010 Almost a year ago, I rescued (with owner's permission) about 20 of these from an abandoned nursery and repotted them. They were at death's door, but are now recovering. I have no place to plant them any more, so would be willing to sell them. They are about chest high in two gallon pots. Send me a message through Punaweb if you are interested. (The message will bounce back to you, but the bounce-back will contain my email address.) RE: Red Flame Thrower Palms - Wao nahele kane - 09-03-2010 Jerry, Loved your garden and Aloha. Thanks for the Flame Thrower Palms and the other plants. Hope to have you out for a visit soon. E ho'a'o no i pau kuhihewa. RE: Red Flame Thrower Palms - JerryCarr - 09-03-2010 The pleasure was mine, and I can't wait to see what you are doing with your place. Cheers, Jerry |
