Phone line but no HELCO? - Donivan - 02-16-2011

Is it possible to have phone service without having HELCO, or do the phone lines piggyback on the HELCO poles? I'm in escrow on some land in HPP and wondering if one could have DSL without any electric service.

Thanks!

Just a thought, I have roadrunner and have been using "Magic jack" for 2 years. I got rid of my landline 2 years ago and haven't missed it. Magicjack works great for when I just don't feel like talking on my cellphone as it uses a regular home phone and sound quality is excellent, not unpredictable like Skype. It costs only 19.95 a year for service.

I have friends off grid that have a regular telco line - and no heco.. leads me to think its no problem

While the lines do usually piggyback, it shouldn't be a problem to pick whichever service you want and ignore the other. Another reason to do what you are considering (if you don't already know) is the fact that unless a previous owner has paid the "special subdivision" power fee, it could cost any where from $1800 to over $4000 to get on the HELCO grid, depending on your location.

We have a landline phone as well as roadrunner cable without any HELCO electric service to the house.

Awesome, thanks everyone! My SSPP is under $1K but, given what my friends are saying about their bills lately, I really want to go solar.
