Hilo Village Buffet - David M - 09-11-2010

A new place to eat in Hilo. Just opened Friday. We had lunch there today - $8.50 each including beverages. Even has a salad bar section with homemade dressings. Has some sort of tie to a culinary school - students do the cooking. Lunch is 10:30 - 2PM, Dinner 5-9 ($12.95) and Sunday brunch 9-3PM. Located at former Uncle Mickey's.

You mean Uncle Mikey's at the Waiakea Villas? That closed? Sounds promising, thanks for the head's up, David.

Are these the same culinary students who cooked at the now defunct Ohana Grill?

Hey Kathy. Yep that's it. We heard the ad on KAPA. Had errands in town yesterday and thoughts we'd lunch at Miyo's as we haven't in more than a year, but enroute decided to give the new place a try.

Chele
There's a Canoe connection, but I don't know what that really means other than printed on the uniforms and we were told there is a website. One of the guys we spoke with talked about multiple fare and sites: wine and Mexican next door, Italian across the parking lot, steak and seafood in main dining room. Sounds ambitious and I wish them well.
While there, our new neighbor came in to talk about working there. He's a chef just moved from mainland but has also worked the resorts Konaside.

Not gourmet dining and the ambiance is Hilo, so at least initially this won't appeal to the snots, but we enjoyed the variety, the salad bar, and drink refills. Buffet cooking is not the same as doing a $50 entree, but we liked it and we go again.

There is a connection with the Pahoa village cafe folks. They have ambitious plans for the whole complex, I do wonder about parking though if they fill all those spaces with eateries. I know they talked about a bakery too.

Is it Bill Salvador's project? (He used to run a similar thing at the Old Hilo Hotel.)

We just ate lunch there today. I made a point of trying everything and it was all delicious. They have a few bugs to work out, but I thought it was great. The best part is that it gives the culinary students from UH Hilo a chance to get their certifications. Everything including the salad dressings is fresh made by them. They even offer a senior discount if you apply... we did.
