Look who's back! - Frankie Stapleton - 09-19-2010

Yeaaaay!!!! Angel Pilago, Brenda Ford, Pete Hoffman and Dom Yagong won outright victories yesterday!!! (All of this gleaned from KITV's posted election results at: http://www.kitv.com/election-results/index.html )

And Guy Enriques came in 2nd in Kau to Brittany Smart but she won by less than 50% so there'll be a runoff in November. Also a runoff between Fred Blas and Emily Naeole.

And look at the race between Faye Hanohano and Tony Marzi...a 113 vote difference! Faye squeaked by Tony! But she's not in...Marlene Hapai has lots more support than was apparent in the primary.

Longtime political observers were right once again about incumbents always benefitting from challengers splitting the vote. That's what happened with James Weatherford and Barbara Lively...together they had 37% of the vote to Blas's 33% and Emily's 30%.

Thanks for giving it your all, Tony and James and Barbara!

And where's all that support coming for Fred whose strategy was apparently to not say anything? Methinks the Mormons. That's who had his signs up first.

Yes Frankie I agree!

What is Puna gonna do now?!? Stick with Aunty or roll the dice on a man that won't show up to answer questions from his constituency? His campaign literature is very, very vague.

This is a true dilemma!

Hope some magic happens!

Are write in candidates allowed in this race in November? Maybe Puna could come up with a viable ninja candidate instead of having to vote for one of these two? I sure wish Lively had had the self restraint to stay out of the race instead of jumping in at the last minute and splitting the votes that would have gone to Weatherford. Talk about a self defeating move!

Carol - write in JAMES WEATHERFORD!!!

I like that!

RE: Look who's back! - Kapohocat - 09-19-2010

We could write in James Weatherford and let it go to the Courts.

Here is some basis for this reasoning: http://ftp.resource.org/courts.gov/c/F2/846/846.F2d.587.86-2703.86-2689.html

IMHO only, I would rather waste my vote in this manner, than vote for the other two.

Edited to add: We all must have hit post at the same time!

RE: Look who's back! - Rob Tucker - 09-19-2010

I think you are taking an 'assume the worst' approach about Fred. I have not found a reason to convict Fred of anything other than choosing his own method of campaigning - which so far looks successful.

This is a Democracy. There is not hint of elective fraud. I suggest everyone relax, assume the best and, as I like to say: Ask questions.

Certainly Fred Blas entered the race with a history of community service and an ability to lead community efforts. I never heard anyone complain about that. Results matter.

There is no one in the election that I would say I could never disagree with. Fred has a lot of good assets and, frankly my friends, a lot of votes.

RE: Look who's back! - robguz - 09-19-2010

This one is tough for me. You couldn't pay me to vote for a far right republican like Fred Blas, but Emily is undeserving and embarrassing and as she told another punawebber, her pseudo-religious bigotry is more important than me and my parter having equal protection under the law.

RE: Look who's back! - Whitey - 09-19-2010

Rob - "assume the worst"

I am not making assumptions - I know Fred Blas and have watched him tell everyone how great he is!

What do you know about Fred?

Have you seen his solution to Coqui frog control? Bulldoze it flat!!! Five houselots in his immediate neighborhood were deforested (native Hala trees removed) to eradicate the coqui. Go look at them now, wall to wall Gunpowder trees 10 feet tall!

He employs the same solution to Albizia tree eradication. He does not lay out a sustainable plan, just gets immediate temporary results and walks away.

Do you not understand that he was a driving force behind the Woodland Center? We can all see today that was not well thought out! And where is he? Not giving testimony either for or against! No answers from Freddy!

IMHO Fred does what HE wants to do, when HE wants to do it and to heck with others that may disagree with him.

Ask the people that have their homes abutting Kahakai Park if they like it better this way! During the 2am parties on the weekends, I'm sure they are pleased!

This is not someone that I want representing me or my interests at the council level! He has his own agenda and if you don't agree with it - piss off! He has already shown he does not want to talk to the riffraff that live in the district; he would much rather entertain Hiloans!

As a last note - Why does he not support the Clean Elections pilot program? Because he can be bought!!!

Listen and Watch very carefully...Things CAN get worse.

RE: Look who's back! - Kapohocat - 09-19-2010

Challenges like Burdick's that I noted are a very real part of our Democracy. I am well aware that if in fact, it went to this, the write in candidate may not see the light of day until it was too late to matter. What a write in candidate does do is give people another option. In the majority of the US, write-ins have been addressed. Hawaii did not address write in votes, and in not doing so violated the 1st and 14th Constitutional Amendments (the Supreme Court's opinion) when it disallowed them to be counted. They also took away a opportunity for not accepting the few choices given.

There is also a long history in the US of write-ins being successful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Write-in_candidate

I am happy that you can now support Fred Blas, Rob. I still am not able to, but neither can I support Auntie Emily. Yesterday's outcome for HC District 5 makes me a little sad.

RE: Look who's back! - Rob Tucker - 09-19-2010

I've always been able to accept the community point of view. I tried many times to communicate with Emily generally without result or more frankly with negative result.

I do not have to agree with her or Fred on anything or everything. If Emily should win I will try again. If Fred wins I am confident of a better reception than I have ever had with Emily. So time will tell.

I am going to give Fred the benefit of any doubts and encourage him to open up with Puna on his positions. I have met with Fred in the past and we have worked together on a couple things.

At this point the election may be Fred's to lose. So far he appears to have shown a concise understanding of the district or he would not be where he is.

Think about it.
