BIG plant sale on March 4 - 5 ? - hawaiideborah - 02-12-2011

Does anyone know details or web link to information on the big plant sale on March 4 - 5 in the Hilo tennis stadium?
I heard that there is a sale, but can't find any info and now wonder if it really is happening.
Can anyone provide details?
Thanks much

It is on the web.

The Big Island Association of Nurserymen presents its 31st Annual Plant Sale on 4 March and 5 March at the Edith Kanakaole Stadium in Hilo. Free admission

Also known as the BIAN sale. They have all different kinds of plants. A lot of hard to find plants too!

Just a warning. That sale is evil. It will make you buy things you have neither the money nor the room for. I speak from experience. Last year I spent $80 on a single banana plant. Ok, it was the rare A'e A'e variegated one and was actually cheap for the variety, but still.

I agree with Rob...BAIN is another manifestation of the COSTCO Effect: Everything looks so reasonably priced and reasonably sized in the big building, and then when you get it home, you say "what the Hell was I thinking???" But like COSTCO, we look forward to every BAIN excursion.

This sales is remarkable for the sheer variety and number of hard-to-find plants available. The overall prices, however, are nothing special, IMHO. Like everyone says, it's really easy to overspend and some things are actually more expensive there than other venues such as farmers' markets.

A lot of people also forget that the plants they see at the sale have been grown in pots with great soil (often in a greenhouse) and with just the right amount of fertilizer, light, insect control, etc.

In other words the plants have been taken care of by professional nurseryman. Without the proper care, the plants can start to deteriorate rather quickly.

THANKS for the great responses.

Do you know what the hours are?

Deborah, there is a .pdf on their website with the hours.
hawaiiplants.com
I wish they would have posted a partial list of the plants for sale. Has anyone seen varieties of breadfruit at past sales?

Just another warning.... You should always dig holes BEFORE you go, and only buy enough plants to fill the holes you have dug.... this is from experience - can't tell you how many times are eyes were bigger than our digging muscles.... one plant had to wait till almost this BIAN sale to finally get in the ground from the last sale, poor plant!
