Victimized papaya farmer still suffering. - Funkstopper - 09-25-2010 I know a lot of fellow punawebbers were concerned when we heard of our neighbor's farm being vandalized and him losing 8000 trees. http://www.kitv.com/news/24129994/detail.html My wife and I have since met him and his family and have been visiting him. His situation is getting worse so I thought I would fish for ideas on how to help. The stress of being victimized made his health go downhill. About 2 months ago Mr. Julian had back surgery. Something has gone wrong and while walking he collapsed. His legs now barely function, and he is confined to a wheelchair. I felt really bad for him and his family as they see their former hardworking breadwinner now dependent on everyone else. I asked if we could help, thinking that maybe I could round up a few punawebbers to help on the farm a couple of Saturday afternoons. He appreciated the offer but pointed out that until his trees grow back their isn't a lot of work to do. So any ideas of ways we could raise funds to help out the family. I've never done a fund raiser before. Maybe one of you has experience. Perhaps we could do a neighborhood garage sale to raise funds. I doubt we could raise a lot in this tough economy but the show of support would do wonders for this family that has been broken by injustice. If anyone would just like to meet him, send me an email and I can get you in touch with him. He appreciates visits as he is not used to being stuck in the house all day. Jim RE: Victimized papaya farmer still suffering. - JerryCarr - 09-25-2010 Jim, neighborhood garage sales are good idea in a bad economy because most people are looking for bargains and don't always have money for new things. I chair the HPP Neighborhood Watch, and our Swap Meet participants with decent garage sale material have done well during the recession. The key is to get supporters to donate useable items and not "dumpster refugees." You will also want to make arrangements in advance for the removal of unsold items. Otherwise, you might literally have a mess on your hands. I wish you much success in your efforts to help Mr. Julian. RE: Victimized papaya farmer still suffering. - Guest - 09-25-2010 Huli Huli chicken is the best known fund-raiser here on the island. Just last week I did a fund raiser for The Knights of Columbus at Saint Michael church in Kona. Between 9:00 am and 02:00 pm we raised over $2,000.00 [their share] and now are planing to do the same every 3 or 4 months. Call me if you want to know more and how. What about some kind of charitable donation fund? I don't know the hows of doing such a thing, but it's easy to set up a Paypal account. In my experience, people are willing to spend less at a garage sale than they might give for a good cause. I mean, I can easily donate $5 and feel good about it, but people will walk away from a garage sale purchase because of a quarter. Weird mentality. A silent auction could bring in more money perhaps? RE: Victimized papaya farmer still suffering. - chandler - 09-25-2010 Someone ought to set-up a night time patrol in the area. Once the word gets out on the coconut wireless, the vandals will pull a fade. Chandler Price RE: Victimized papaya farmer still suffering. - james weatherford - 09-25-2010 There are children, right? Do they need school supplies? What size clothes do they wear? ...
