We are moving to Pahoa area in a couple of months and have been researching household goods shipping containers. Matson looks good but the container arrives on a set of wheels that puts the floor 4 feet off the ground - and no ramps. I can load it fine on this end, but unloading it there myself is another story. I looked at letting Matson handle it, but the hourly charges are pretty steep if the truck time goes over 4 hrs from the dock. Neither MAtson nor the local companies seem to rent 12' x 2' ramps - does anyone have experience with this?

Depends on your budget. Easiest thing in my opinion is to rent a short flatbed truck with a hydraulic lift gate from Harper's for the day. About $100. Or buy some lumber and build a ramp, reuse the material for something else later. Renting a truck is probably least expensive.

We used a "freight forwarder" in SF Bay area. They arranged for the Matson container and loaded it using their own ramps.

We bought a house in HPP fully furnished, as the sellers were moving back to the mainland. We're moving to the BI as soon as possible. Since we need no furniture, dishes, etc, etc, etc, we will get by with one ABF "Relocube". They are like 92"H, 82"W 72"D. Cost from the Tacoma, Wa. area to HPP is like $2600 per cube. The good thing is that they drop the cube at your place you are moving from and you load it and lock it. The floor is at ground level-no ramps needed. They then deliver it to your destination. This will work great for us. We'll bring a Toyota Tacoma pickup too for a price of around $1100.
You can also buy a shipping container and keep it for storage, but they would have to drop it with a crane.

I got an estimate from ABF for these Relocubes. They will deliver to your door. They load and unload the cube with a little fork lift like the ones Home Depot uses to deliver stuff. It may not be big enough for you, but they do serve the Big Island.
