Kaleo's wins award - Markie - 11-10-2010

Honolulu Magazine gave Kaleo's second place of all restaurants
on the Big Island. Here's their list:

Best Big Island Restaurant
Gold – Merriman’s Waimea
Silver – Kaleo’s Bar & Grill
Bronze – Huggo’s
Top 5 – Brown’s Beach House
Top 5 – Café Pesto Kawaihae

Kaleo's is very good. Their namesake cocktail, Kaleo's Punch, is swoonworthy. That said, they need to do this: 1) Make the music Hawaiian -- intending no disrespect to the fine musicians who play there, the music is lounge music and destroys the sense of place 2) Turn down the volume in the main room, and 3) Train their waiters to be more professional and less casual.

And improve their red sauce! Who wants to pay 15 bucks for a plate of pasta with a tiny splash of sauce that tastes like it came straight out of a can. It is the only thing on their menu my husband can eat and after the last two experiences he won't go back. I really like their food, but after tasting his dinner I can see why he is so unwilling to return.

While I have not been to Kaleo's in a long time, if Huggo's is #3 than I'd rather eat at home! It's an overpriced tourist trap serving average food. I eat out a lot and there are other restaurants on the Big Island that are better than their Top 5.

Not contradictory, I don't think, pog. To express nahenahe thoughts still requires discipline and excellent musicianship and a certain level of professionalism -- they just make it sound easy. It isn't. And striving for professional level service can mean something as simple as not delivering a cocktail with a napkin that is sopping wet from spillage en route.

John -- I have to agree on Huggo's. It has a great location in that it is near Snorkel Bob's but is otherwise unremarkable. One place I really like is Annie's Island Fresh Hamburgers down near Captain Cook (might not have the name right).

And I still contend that the best two restaurants on the island are not restaurants at all: 1) Kalani's for lunch and 2) the Green Papaya Salad ladies of the Hilo and Maku'u Farmer's markets. I asked for my salad so hot last time, I couldn't even say hello my throat was so swollen with pleasure. But, you know, hello!

Second best on Island hmmmmmmm guess they only went to those places because in my opinion there are plenty of places much better than their second choice. Oh well such is life. You know what they say about opinions..... yikes just joking.

As for me I have tried Kaleo's on three occasions and all three were dissapointing. Music was good tho!!! And Huggo's number three??? agree with Johns opinion completly. I had great meals at many other places that should be in the top five but then again JMHO !!

Hey Rob,

How about a topic for favorite eateries?

John, I know that you and I both like Paolo's; So how about your top 5. 5 budget and 5 non-budget?

The last that I visited Kona, we tried a new place that was across from The King Kam where Paleo's Used to be. It was good and budget minded. I also like La Pasta and the Kona Inn Lounge side. Any suggestions that you would care to share? East side we like The Seaside and Hilo Bay Cafe, but are still looking for some different choices.

Dan, Start a topic called "restaurant recommendations" or something like that and it will be very searchable in Puna talk. There are 22 pages of topics which use the word restaurant somewhere so the topic should be more specific.

Assume the best and ask questions.
