Island Style Home Design - Dinamight - 12-07-2010
John the Architect mentioned island style home desing in a previous post.
We are remodelling a house and want to make it island style, starting with a new roof.
What is island style considered to be here?
I would love to hear ideas and opinions!

And make sure you do it before the new Building Codes come into effect. You probably will not be able to have Island Style housing using the new codes. - Fight the new code proposals.

Anywhere from a 3 in twelve to a five in twelve roof pitch and a tin roof. Huge overhangs, two and a half feet minimum. Hip roofs or dutch hips with the vent are generally more island like than gable roofs. There is also the really old style of gable roofs which had the tip pitched down. You see that still in Hilo occasionally, but not often anymore. You can also leave the roof rafters exposed without any facia or gutters. It depends on how island you wanna get.
