Growing Food & Chickens in HI - Jason762 - 12-11-2010 If the landowners will permit it, I would like to start a garden for food and have some chickens on-hand. I am asking here first to see if it's viable to do so. I'd like to grow some vegetables. What grows well? Also, what about fruit trees? The landowner has oranges and lemons, and may have an avocado shrub. What about keeping chickens for eggs? What's that involve, and do people do that? Thanks! Once I get these basic questions answered I'll probably be asking more in-depth questions. Jason RE: Growing Food & Chickens in HI - csgray - 12-11-2010 Every possible aspect of those questions has been covered exhaustively here. Use the archive search feature and all your questions will be answered. Carol RE: Growing Food & Chickens in HI - Rob Tucker - 12-11-2010 What landowners are you referring to? Are you planning to rent? Most all land in Puna is zoned AG. RE: Growing Food & Chickens in HI - Jason762 - 12-11-2010 CSGray, there's only 2 pages of topics and I went through them all. Where's the archive search feature? Rob, I prefer not to say who they are unless the person(s) give me permission. Yes, I am renting the property. What does "zoned AG" mean? RE: Growing Food & Chickens in HI - csgray - 12-11-2010 If you look at the upper right hand corner of your screen it says "search" right in between "members" and "FAQ". It is a pretty simple search engine without a bunch of bells and whistles. Carol RE: Growing Food & Chickens in HI - Jason762 - 12-11-2010 (imagine me smacking myself in the head) Thank you. RE: Growing Food & Chickens in HI - Guest - 12-12-2010 hj RE: Growing Food & Chickens in HI - Jason762 - 12-12-2010 Mauka, I bought a ticket, will be coming Jan 18th. AlaskaAir had tickets to Kona for $150, and I had 10k airline miles (50% discount) so I bought the ticket. As for renting land someone gave me an offer to house sit/rent their house in Pahoa. RE: Growing Food & Chickens in HI - Rob Tucker - 12-12-2010 AG is a zoning designation (Agriculture) which allows all farming operations, gardens, field crops, fish ponds, greenhouses, live stock. Whether your landlord permits it might be another matter. RE: Growing Food & Chickens in HI - csgray - 12-12-2010 Renters should always check with their landlord before planting trees. Trees grow fast here and removing one later that a tenant planted in a bad place can be expensive. Same thing with really persistent plants or potentially invasive plants. Setting up chickens is probably not worth it unless you plan to stick around for a few years. Carol |
