Tire and Battery disposal - Dinamight - 12-13-2010

I did try to search for this but was not successful - I have 2 tires to get rid of, from a Dodge Neon and several small batteries (mostly AA).

Is there a place I can go to dispose of tires and batteries?

thank you

The only place to dispose of tires is at a tire store. They will probably charge you.
Take the batteries to a household hazardous waste event. The next one is at the Pahoa Transfer Station: Sunday, April 3rd, 2011, 8:30 to 15:30 .

Dinamight,

I appreciate your asking and wanting to do the right thing. It is likely true that there will be a charge to dispose of the tires. Unfortunately this inspires too many people to dump them in the bushes or on the side of the road. It is not convenient having to wait for the hazardous disposal dates but it is the way it is on a rural island. So set the batteries aside with old paint somewhere and mark the calendar. It is a good citizen that does the right thing.

Mahalo.

Aloha:
If you're anywhere near Kea'au Xfr station, bring your batteries to the Reuse and Recycle Center (to the right when you go down the roadway toward the recycle bins).
One of the employees will take from you. where they go after that, I dunno. I imagine that other reuse centers will do the same, you should ask.
(+1 on what Rob said--good for you for wanting to safely recycle them)

a sawz all and a good metal blade will help give those tires a second life

I use the tread in places that get a lot of wear and tear

Does Hawaii County specify Rubberized Asphalt on road projects? If not, that would be a way to open up recycling of tires.

Bob, I think that the county is still some years away from actually utilizing recycled content material. For the moment the best they can do is spend too much money building recycling centers which don't use recycled content material in the construction.

Rob, forward this to everyone you know involved in State or County government that has anything to do with road engineering, product specifications, maintenance, etc. Remember that the use of Rubberized Asphalt in many areas came about by citizen inquiry. There will reach a point where someone with enough authority will say "Look into this" or ask "Why aren’t we using it?” There will be a lot of opposition initially but after a while, it’s going to become an issue that they have to address when people are always asking about it. Even getting a political figure to take up the banner and claim credit for its use is fine so long as it becomes a reality.

Maybe later. I've made numbers of presentations to county over the years. Before I try again I think I will await a new mayor.

RE: Tire and Battery disposal - Dinamight - 12-16-2010

Well, I managed to freecycle the tires (still a fair bit of tread left) and I'll try Keaau for the batteries, thank you everyone.
