Can someone translate this for me? - EightFingers - 01-12-2011

I look at HVO's website every day and today I found this in the Update:

"... The tiltmeter on the north flank of Pu`u `O`o recorded weak inflation to 11:15 pm when there was a slight deflation followed by more weak inflation but with a resumed superimposed tilt oscillation, probably indicating episodic effusion. ..."

Huh? Sounds like a Hula lesson to me![Big Grin]

Deflation and inflation are the cone "breathing" in and out, in other words, expanding and contracting slightly. Episodic effusion is the lava that has been being pumped out within the cone. The night time views have been pretty spectacular!

Yebbut what is "superimposed tilt oscillation"?

RE: Can someone translate this for me? - mdd7000 - 01-12-2011

I think it means "lava still flowing downhill."

Tilt oscillation is back and forth movement of the tilt meter, superimposed means that data is overlying the other data. they have a pretty good explanation of that stuff buried somewhere in their website.

We went to the Volcano Talk up at the visitors center last night...
as for "What does this mean, as far as the volcano blowing..."

It seems that the Halema`uma`u explosion in '08 (re Gregs toon) was not anticipated due to the deflation stage it was in, although it had drastically increased emissions and tremors during the winter of '08....normal indicators of an potential event.... but they are normally seen in an inflation stage.... so....

So, it seems that "I dun-no if volcano gonna blow" may be a fairly good translation of the sci-speak!
