I'm curious... the way I read the code, the first links listed are incorrect... as of Jan 2010 for new construction water heaters are required to be solar...

UNLESS

...you live in an area which does not receive enough days of sunshine, in which case you can apply for a variance to use these tankless heaters.

Can anyone verify? Personally I'd like to install solar with one of these propane tankless heaters as backup for long grey stretches of weather (in Volcano)... not sure what the Building Dept will have to say. Anyone know?

Was that the adopted code, or the proposed code changes? I'm not completely up to speed on how all that turned out.

As I understand it, the requirement for solar water heaters in new construction was adopted as of Jan, 2010; then the amendment to allow variances where sunlight was insufficient went into effect this January.

My friends house just failed it's plumbing inspection because he used an EcoTemp tankless water heater. He has the variance to allow one of these instead of solar.
He was told EcoTemp is not a "listed" brand by the inspector.
Does anyone know how to find the "list"? The State link to find them is a dead end.
Apparently paloma is on the list. Anyone had success with other brands? Prices vary wildly.

More likely, there is no "list", it's just "whatever the inspector feels like today".

This problem is not unique to Puna or even Hawaii; anything not explicitly written in the relevant codes will be "at the inspector's discretion".

Just get some tape and cover up eco-temp ... print out a "paloma" logo and scotch tape it on ... Smile

Could it be that it is spelled Eccotemp?
