end of free bus rides? - Bullwinkle - 01-29-2011

Charging 50 cents or a dollar per ride would raise more than $700,000 a year, Kenoi said, indicating fee hikes in other areas also may be necessary.

"These are not the most-popular decisions," he said, "but they're very, very necessary ones.

Didn't they spend $400,000.00 last year on new furniture and window dressings?

Perhaps, but hopefully that's a one-time expense vs. an on-going (and increasing) cost of providing free bus transportation. I mean seriously, you can ride the bus for free from here to Kona???

Personally, I've never agreed with the free bus, especially the free ride to work for the union voters.
I'd favor a low cost pass system for seniors and students and a reasonable fee for those that use it so they don't have to drive to work.

I think that the free bus is critical to some members of our community. Perhaps ride vouchers could be provided to the most needy. A disadvantaged student trying to get to school? A disabled grandmother wanting to visit her daughter in Kona? A single mom trying to get to a job interview?

I would support free bus vouchers for those in real need.
