most accurate weather forcast for Hilo area? - hawaiideborah - 02-08-2011
Having now lived here for 5 months, I can't find an accurate weather forecast for the Hilo area.
I am using NOAA and Weather Underground. Neither of these are correct as far as my own non-scientific observations go. I often go into Hilo to meet friends and would love to know what the weather holds in store.
Any suggestions besides NOAA and Weather Underground?

NOAA is better than Weather Underground but neither is very reliable. POG is correct. Weather usually comes from the East. Look at the ocean to see what's coming. You can look at the radar on the NOAA site also.

KeaauRich's Law of Puna/Hilo Weather: "If you want it to be sunny, it'll rain. If you want rain, it will be sunny. And whatever it's doing now, it will do the opposite as soon as you adapt to current conditions" Note: this law holds true 50% of the time...

The most "accurate" forecast is a one-size-fits-all kind of deal: "partly sunny with scattered showers." Say that and you'll almost always hit the mark!
Upon reflection, perhaps this belongs in the You-Know-You're-In-Puna thread?

] At most locations, it never gets really cold or really hot by mainland standards, and it can rain almost any time on the windward side of the island. That knowledge works for me.

Ya, I know about looking at the east sky.
I was hoping that living here would be better than on the Washington State coast where there is no dopplar radar and it is never accurate. All we did on the Washington coast was look over the ocean every morning. Guess I will keep up with that habit only looking east over the ocean from here. Oh well, it was worth a try.

I find the Wunderground dopplar radar to be quite accurate. The station near Pahoa sweeps from Pahala to Hilo. I time my work on my farm
to avoid heavy rain and I think its great.

I use Yahoo as my home page and when I'm on the mainland I can check the weather in HPP. But ia awlays just says "showers ans 79-80 degrees" for the description of every day.

Hawaii247.com has a good weather page with animated radar and satellite. I use that almost daily to see what's coming. Unless there is a big obvious storm coming most of the forecasts are useless. It so rarely rains anywhere the entire day and is so variable even within a small area, I don't know how good forecasts are even possible, again outside of obvious storm systems.
