RE: Diesel Generator - pbmaise - 06-01-2011 The brand that many sailors swear by is Yanmar. Expect to pay more, however, justification is based on how long you will own your home. The Yanmar should last you about 15 years. I'm interested to know why you want one so big. 2kw should be more than adequate for most people unless you are trying to run a 1.5 horsepower AC unit. I have a 2kw unit and it is a fuel sipping 4 stroke by Honda. I use it to run power tools and equalize my deep cycle batteries. I have 1200 amp hours of batteries but don't like to charge at a rate greater than 60 amps. Yes I'm tempted to push the battery bank harder, however, it is better to de-sulphonize batteries at a slower rate. Note: If you ever see a bunch of batteries sitting by the waste transfer station, odds are good you can bring them back if you know how to do a good equalization. My bank was almost dead and it took about 2 months of keeping them at a high rate of charge and pushing with no load on them to get the sulfates back into solution. So if you ever see that battery bank tossed out..get your SG tester out and check individual cells to see if there is a big difference between cells. Well i better be quite now...talking about batteries will fill this site up. Phil Pahoa RE: Diesel Generator - Hotzcatz - 06-04-2011 Phil is right, that does sound like a particularly large generator. I suppose you could run a welder with it? For most household uses, 2KW to 2.5KW is generally enough. We ran our house on 1.5KW for years. If you have hot tub heater and jets, though, you may want a larger genset. Kurt Wilson |
