Tank foundation - grsjax - 06-09-2011

I am putting in a new 10k gallon catchment tank and want to put it on a concrete foundation ring. The price quoted me by the tank supplier for the concrete foundation ring seems a bit high. Anyone know what a reasonable price for a concrete ring 16' in diameter, 1' wide and 6" deep (about 50sf of concrete)? Any suggestions for a good concrete guy?

No matter how thin you slice it, its still balony.

What is the purpose of such a ring?

Supports the steel walls of the tank.

Placing concrete in such a shallow and long narrow pour will need a very solid base to bare on and rebar to hold it together, as it will crack. Forming in an arc and bending rebar in an arc can be very time consuming. Wouldn't compacted crushed rock do the job?
Just a thought,

Dan

The problem with placing it on crushed rock is that the edge is so thin it will eventually sink in. If there is any softness in the base course the sinking can happen pretty fast. That is the problem I have now. The original builder didn't pay attention to the ground and placed the tank on an area that contained debris from the land clearing. As a result the tank has sunk several inches on one side in a period of 3 years. I would like to avoid that in the future and not knowing for sure what is under the ground here I wanted some insurance against future problems.

I do realize it requires special care in construction and use of rebar to make the ring strong enough.

No matter how thin you slice it, its still balony.

Any of the steel ring catchment tank companies have a diagram for how that concrete footing should be constructed.

Call them and have them email you a copy if they can.

You would need to know how much weight the concrete has to carry. What kind of tank is it? Do the sides carry the weight of the water too, or just their own weight with the bottom of the tank resting on the ground? Your dimensions would make it about a yard of concrete, but 6" deep seems like it would only be sufficient if the sides were only carrying their own weight(and the top). My two cents...

Also, it might be helpful to visualize what 83,000 lbs. of water will look like sloshing around after a 7+ earthquake. How far will it "dance" on your foundation?

Sloshing water would be pretty low on the list of things I think about if there was a 7+ quake.
Isn't there a minimum distance a tank has to be away from the house?

No there isnt for a catchment tank. Wastewater must be 5' min from house.
