What is this? - hrooster - 03-12-2011 I see these berries in bloom every spring near Peepekeo, but I can't find what they are.... thanks in advance... http://the-hroost.com/public/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/CIMG0030.jpg http://the-hroost.com RE: What is this? - leilaniguy - 03-13-2011 Looks like Ti to me. RE: What is this? - hrooster - 03-13-2011 No, it's a large tree, about 20' tall. I always assumed it was macadamia, but have never found other images of such berries on macadamia trees. Here is an image of the tree: http://the-hroost.com/public/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/CIMG0031.jpg http://the-hroost.com RE: What is this? - dobanion - 03-13-2011 Christmas Berry/Brazilian Pepper? If so, nasty and invasive. All over lower Ka'u. RE: What is this? - Radiopeg - 03-13-2011 Does not look like the Brazilian pepper to me. How large are the fruits? Life goes on, with you or without you. RE: What is this? - hrooster - 03-13-2011 each fruit is about 1/4-1/2 inch diameter. For a long time I thought they were flowers, and I was quite surprised when I finally stopped and saw that they were berries. There are groves of them just after the bypass area south of Peepekeo, so they appear to be cultivated. http://the-hroost.com RE: What is this? - hrooster - 03-16-2011 Citharexylum caudatum (juniperberry) according to the Hawaii Plant ID group at flickr. I can sleep tonight! http://the-hroost.com RE: What is this? - Carey - 03-16-2011 Great job Hrooster! Here is a HEAR image link: http://www.hear.org/starr/images/image/?q=010425-0086&o=plants RE: What is this? - hikatz - 03-16-2011 Another link, which may help in identifying other Hawaiian plants. If you click on any of the pictures it gives you in depth information about that particular flower/tree or plant. http://wildlifeofhawaii.com/flowers/category/view-plants/hawaiian-fruit-or-cones/page/3/ RE: What is this? - hrooster - 03-16-2011 Great site, hikatz, thanks! It was the Starrs who answered my question at Flickr, tho I had spent a long time looking through HEAR (the Starrs own site)....I just couldn't figure a way to narrow my search there. http://the-hroost.com |
