Birdwatching - Radiopeg - 03-29-2011 In reading the posts regarding Alaskana moving back to the mainland, I realized one group I'd like to hook up with is a birding group. I have missed it here in my current location. So does Puna have an active birding group? I enjoy getting out an looking for critters, but enjoy birds so much, I think that will meet my critter needs. Add in some whales, and fish ID, I think I can be well entertained. So any Audubon group or similar? Life goes on, with you or without you. RE: Birdwatching - missydog1 - 03-29-2011 Have you ever contacted the Volcano Art Center? They lead birdwatching nature walks. From their site and newsletter, they are a cool group. Volcano is kind of far for me or I might like to get involved with what they do there. http://www.volcanoartcenter.org/ RE: Birdwatching - missydog1 - 03-29-2011 PS. It is easy to find birdwatching "adventures" here, but they cost money, involve going on a tour. There is a wildlife refuge in Hakalau where some go. There is birdwatching in the cloud forest of Hualalai, up Kaloko, but that is private land or closed, and I think you have to go with Hawaii Forest & Trail because they have permission to go there. I watch birds a lot just on my property. My uncle wrote ornithology articles for the Encyclopedia Brittanica and was quite the serious birdwatcher. It's a real passion, isn't it? btw, I don't think you want a "birding" group. The birding groups and tours are here to SHOOT birds. I think you want birdwatching. This site by Oahu Nature Tours has wonderful pictures and explains habitats of birds in hawai'i. http://www.oahunaturetours.com/photogallery/birds/photobirdsindex.html RE: Birdwatching - Radiopeg - 03-31-2011 Thanks, Kathy, I have been a "birder" for years. First time I have heard it applied to hunters. I will have to give Volcano a try. I'll be close enough to do that. I like the activity as an excuse to get out. I am not as good at identifying birds, so like to go with more experienced people. If only they stayed in one place longer, sigh, I could flip through the books, doing the "stare and compare". |
