"Super Moon" on 3/19/11 - hawaiideborah - 03-16-2011 From NASA Science News: "Mark your calendar. On March 19th, a full Moon of rare size and beauty will rise in the east at sunset. It's a super "perigee moon"--the biggest in almost 20 years. A perigee full Moon brings with it extra-high "perigean tides," but this is nothing to worry about, according to NOAA. In most places, lunar gravity at perigee pulls tide waters only a few centimeters (an inch or so) higher than usual. Local geography can amplify the effect to about 15 centimeters (six inches)--not exactly a great flood. The best time to look is when the Moon is near the horizon. That is when illusion mixes with reality to produce a truly stunning view. For reasons not fully understood by astronomers or psychologists, low-hanging Moons look unnaturally large when they beam through trees, buildings and other foreground objects. On March 19th, why not let the "Moon illusion" amplify a full Moon that's extra-big to begin with? The swollen orb rising in the east at sunset may seem so nearby, you can almost reach out and touch it." RE: "Super Moon" on 3/19/11 - missydog1 - 03-16-2011 Thanks hawaiideborah! I hadn't seen that, definitely want to catch this one. The last big moonrise I was driving, which wasn't ideal. This time I hope to be in position. This is going to be way better than G. Bush declaring war against Iraq on my birthday. Thanks Deborah. Sounds like a trip to Galveston is in order. Wish it were Hilo bay instead. RE: "Super Moon" on 3/19/11 - EightFingers - 03-16-2011 We'll head down and watch! RE: "Super Moon" on 3/19/11 - sittall - 03-17-2011 Thanks for the heads up hawaiideborah! Its my birthday, too, and the full perigee moon is going to be the perfect ending for a beach day. RE: "Super Moon" on 3/19/11 - tada - 03-17-2011 Don't mean to cast the pall here but I heard of a "second shoe to drop" earthquake caused by the pull of the moon Let's pray that don't happen. RE: "Super Moon" on 3/19/11 - PaulW - 03-17-2011 Don't worry, it won't. RE: "Super Moon" on 3/19/11 - pjmather - 03-18-2011 what time will moon cross the horizon? RE: "Super Moon" on 3/19/11 - sittall - 03-18-2011 Moon rise is about 7pm, sunset is about 15 mins. before, so it should be a pretty twilight. RE: "Super Moon" on 3/19/11 - tada - 03-18-2011 Full moon fever rising!!! |
