Mac Users Beware... - pslamont - 05-16-2011 We have enjoyed not having the risk of virus infection that PC users have suffered. We are protected no more. The first MAC virus has hit the net. I am a victim, but it is only my not thinking that made it so. I had a window pop up saying the page I was on was questionable and I needed to click for the system to... well I don't know to what.. don't remember but I know I clicked something and that did it. All of a sudden two things happened. One, pornographic pop ups appeared peppered with advertising for viagra. Next two black boxes arrived saying that I was infected and to click to remove immediately. I never paid attention that it was not my own virus utility protection since as a mac user we never use it! ARRRRGHGHHHHH It began downloading multiple files and flooding me with pornography. Not just any old pornography, but BDSM and "GAY" pornorgaphy, as the pages were labeled. I was busy clickig those windows closed and that was the mask while it downloaded the rest of whatever it is. SO, you have been warned. I am on my way to Tropical MAC downtown who say that they are getting unending phone calls for all over town. Guess we all did what I did. So, beware, don't accuse your mate of doing something inappropriate on your computer and go get it fixed. They quoted me $30 and about 30 minutes. I want to be the kind of woman that, when my feet hit the floor each morning, the devil says "Oh Crap, She's up!" RE: Mac Users Beware... - Rob Tucker - 05-16-2011 I had that show up too. I killed the window and escaped. Sorry for your problem. RE: Mac Users Beware... - Kapohocat - 05-16-2011 Just FYI, killing the window by x'ing out doesnt kill that virus loading. You actually have to hit the power off button. If you hit the x to close (on a PC), the virus still loads - just causes similar issues but more slowly. They must have set up that virus the same as it was on PC's about two years ago - nothing but power off switch kills it - if you do any of the things you did it loads one way, and if you do what Rob did, it loads another way. This virus is merciless. RE: Mac Users Beware... - Rob Tucker - 05-16-2011 But I didn't get it. RE: Mac Users Beware... - PaulW - 05-16-2011 It's going to be tough for some Mac users at first - PC users have built up immunity. You don't get a virus out of nowhere, it's usually a suspect website or email. Think before you click. If Rob had it, he'd know it by now. RE: Mac Users Beware... - webstershamm - 05-16-2011 Aloha mac-nuts http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/05/fake-mac-defender-antivirus-app-scams-users-for-money-cc-numbers.ars?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+arstechnica%2Findex+%28Ars+Technica+-+Featured+Content%29 This link, is a good explanation of the current mac Threat. REMEMBER: turn OFF "open safe files automatically" in safari preferences. And do not enter your admin. password for files that pop up when browsing the net. If you think you are infected, use a freeware app called http://www.clamxav.com/ RE: Mac Users Beware... - Kapohocat - 05-17-2011 quote: You probably had a good virus program. RE: Mac Users Beware... - Rob Tucker - 05-17-2011 Problem is I don't have an anti virus program. I don't use Safari either. RE: Mac Users Beware... - punafish - 05-17-2011 Wow, close call for me. I'm always hesitant about clicking buttons on any "funny" windows that randomly pop up, probably because I used to be a PC guy. The screen (red and black as I recall?) showed up on a tab that had hotmail open--actually it happened twice two days ago. Both times I clicked the back arrow and all was fine. I was suspicious but didn't know until this post what it was. Thanks for sharing. RE: Mac Users Beware... - pslamont - 05-18-2011 For anyone who may be or have been as non-thinking as me, Tropical Mac did the fix in 30 minutes for $30. The fellow who runs it is very nice. My Mac is running fast and happy now. I want to be the kind of woman that, when my feet hit the floor each morning, the devil says "Oh Crap, She's up!" |
