Plant it Hawaii semi annual sale - macuu222 - 04-02-2011

Don't forget...Plant it Hawaii's semi-annual retail sale is next Friday and Saturday April 8th and 9th.

Do they sell ornamental trees or just fruit trees? I know someone who really wants a couple flowering trees for the landscape. I've never been to a Plant-it sale. I've acquired a bunch of trees with Plant-it tags from buying them with the house or at a nursery. They were all fruit trees.

I would send this person to Rozette's but he lives on the west side. Not sure where to buy trees there.

Where is the Plant-it sale again?

Do they have clove and nutmeg ?

My friend Sonia in Honomu aka http://www.soniatasteshawaii.com/ is looking for these or anyone who has starts she can have let her know!

Kathy,
I've gone to their sales several times and only seen (and bought...) fruit trees. Their website also seems to indicate that they only do fruits (hmm....that didn't come out right, but you get the drift...). Plant It Hawaii is up in Kurtistown, so if your friend is OK coming that far from the west side, he may as well go to Rozettes if you think they have what he's looking for.

They had Magnolia, Pak lan (Michelia alba) and Puakenikeni during the last year sale.

They sell do sell clove. I thought they sold nutmeg too. Anyway here is a list of the exotics that they sell: http://www.plantithawaii.com/Plant_It_Hawaii/Fruit_Guide/Pages/Exotics.html

Thanks KeaauRich and Iju.

I just talked to him and he wants a rainbow shower tree. Apparently it was $250 at a nursery in Kona (the one by Costco), because it's grafted. I will check out Rozette's. I doubt he wanted to come to Kurtistown, or HPP, but he might need to.

Paklan Is a great tree IMHO. Also known as michelia champaca, alba variety? I bought a smallish five gallon one for $79, and in two years in Hilo it had become a healthy broad and tall shade tree. Intoxicating fragrance. Doubt it would thrive with arid winds.

Puakenikeni is a nice tree, and works on the west side too, but it grows so slowly.

When I think of a nutmeg tree I think of the old nursery rhyme, My Little Nut Tree. [Smile]

I would like to get a good avocado tree, so maybe I'll go. Citrus I have up the wazoo.
btw, Plant It Hawai'i sells the apple trees that fruit in Hawai'i. Anna and Golden Dorset. Mine are doing great. The Anna has a lot of fruit; the Dorset is basically the pollinator that doesn't fruit very well but enables the Anna trees to bear.

Rainbow shower trees have to be grafted. They don't produce seeds. That's why they are expensive.

Thanks for the tip Kathy. I have a Dorsett that's produced a few yummy apples..but just a few. I'll have to pick up an Anna to plant along side it. I got my clove tree from Plant it Hawaii a few years back. it's doing really well and the leaves are aromatic, but no clove buds yet. It's about 4 years old and 6 feet high. I remember they did have some interesting spice trees.

Right, I mentioned the grafting. And it's because I told him they don't produce beans that he wants one. But is $250 the best price?
