March tsunami timeline - rbakker - 04-07-2011 If I'm not mistaken, the earthquake in Japan happened at 7:46 PM (March 10th) in Hawaii. I'm told we received an automated phone call from civil defence at about 8:30 PM. Would that be correct? If so, I'm very impressed. I can't remember for sure if I signed up for phone alerts. Did everyone in Hawaii receive that phone call? RE: March tsunami timeline - Kelena - 04-07-2011 I received it, and I live in Oceanside, California. RE: March tsunami timeline - Kapohocat - 04-07-2011 quote: I am signed up and got a text msg not a phone call. RE: March tsunami timeline - KeaauRich - 04-07-2011 I signed up for text and phone. Got the text fairly early and the phone call about an hour later. RE: March tsunami timeline - spunky - 04-07-2011 I found out on Facebook in a post from the news site Mauinow.com, more than 20 minutes BEFORE getting the phone call from Civil Defense. I was at the gas station filling my tank by the time I got the call from CD. Rbakker - you only get the call if you are signed up for Citywatch. RE: March tsunami timeline - missydog1 - 04-08-2011 I got one, but I can't remember when exactly. I am signed up. Carey had a topic up on Punaweb within five minutes of the quake, and I knew about the quake within one minute due to being signed up for emails on quakes from USGS, which is why I went to Punaweb right away to post about it in case it was not already posted. Hawaii TV interrupted programming and went to full coverage at about 9 pm. "let the music keep our spirits high And let the buildings keep our children dry Let creation reveal its secrets by and by ~ Before the Deluge, Jackson Browne RE: March tsunami timeline - rbakker - 04-08-2011 Thanks for all the information so far! KathyH, I signed up to the USGS alerts as well after reading your tip, but I don't receive their emails until at least half an hour after the quake. Next time you get one, could you check the times? Hawaii is 10 hours behind UTC. Thanks. I vaguely remember signing up for phone alerts, but this is the first one we've ever received. I often get emails about flash flooding on the Big Island but no calls except this one. RE: March tsunami timeline - missydog1 - 04-08-2011 OK, I will check ... When there's been a local quake that was big enough to come through on USGS, it showed up in about five minutes. I no longer have the ones from the big quake. RE: March tsunami timeline - missydog1 - 04-08-2011 rbakker, you are right; it took a half hour. I went and found Carey's quake topic, and by the time stamp on my post I can see I learned of it around 8:10-15. Good to know. I will add an edit note in my earlier post to say I was wrong about how quick it was. I suppose I could look at my cell phone bill and maybe see when the CD call came in. RE: March tsunami timeline - missydog1 - 04-08-2011 That's odd. There's no incoming call on my cell, and no text message for that time frame. I definitely got something from them, and I'm pretty sure it was an automated call. I was already glued to the TV for the news, so I didn't pay much attention to it. |
