Merry Monarch tickets ? - hawaiideborah - 04-09-2011

I am looking to purchase two Merry Monarch tickets to either of the group competitions (4/29 or 4/30).
Anyone have any leads on where to find two tickets?
Thanks much

If you send your order in the day after Christmas Day you stand a good chance of getting tickets. Other than that line up for the free night, it is usually pretty spectacular. There are usually a lot of tickets sold to Japanese visitors, but I don't know how or where anyone who will no longer be making the trip from Japan due to the earthquake and tsunami would sell their tickets. You might call the office and see if they are taking tickets back.

When we had extras we always had more friends and coworkers who wanted them than we had tickets, I don't think I've ever seen them being resold.

We have gone every year, and sometimes people are selling extra tickets that they can not use at the door. You can try craigslist, but there are usually more requester than tickets.

Oh, and there is no guarantee that sending in a request on 12/26 will get a ticket... it is a lottery even on the first ticket day...

BE AWARE the festival organizers do not allow scalping, only face value or less transactions.... story is that anyone involved in an over cost transaction can be eliminated from ever receiving tickets.

I see a lot of people selling their tickets in front of the stadium. Show up early and maybe you'll get lucky.

You can also usually just walk in for the second half and find an empty seat.

Yes, I knew to send in my order day after Christmas. I did that, but no luck.
I have put in ad on craigslist for tickets also.
The idea about Japanese not coming.. good idea. i will call MM ticket office tomorrow and see if they have any cancels from Japan. Thanks for that tip.

Rob,
THIS IS A GREAT TIP.
How do you do it? Isn't there anyone standing at door taking tickets? Can we just walk in?
What time do you suggest trying this?
Thanks for this good info.

I've attended ticket in hand in the past and found that the crowd thins down midway into the show no matter how excellent it is. One year I was watching it live on TV and noticed all the empty seats... so I just went down and found that at least at the mid point of the evening the gates were open, I just walked in found a seat and enjoyed the second half. Done this a couple times.

Being there live is worth the experience. Having done that the fact is that the live camera coverage on television is actually very, very good... not looking over someone's head from a static point of view. Some of the overhead camera shots definitely expand the view.

But the ambiance, the chants, the music, the overall is such an experience I recommend to be there sometime in person anyway you can.

THANKS Rob. We are going to do this second half walk-in trick if we can't get tickets. REALLY appreciate the tip. Want to see it in person as well as the tv.

Deb,

I may have two tickets available, but won't know till closer to the event. I managed to get two and was hoping to bundle them in with a vacation rental package, but so far no takers... So if we remain open that weekend, I'll be looking to sell the tickets I have at face value. My other suggestion would be to go to the "free" night on Wednesday (no tickets needed) for the "live" experience (the lovely chants, the music, the ambiance on the plus side, the uncomfortable seating, long walks to bathroom lines, and loooong evening on the downside). You can then stay home watch the rest of the nights on high def TV to actually get a better view of the dancers along with commentary so you know what's actually going on...

Back on the mainland, we used to go out to the Christmas tree farm to cut our own tree about every five years or so. The first year (the year we'd go cut) was always full of anticipation of the feel of cool air on our faces, the smell of freshly cut pine, the camaraderie of the family and friends as we chose the perfect tree, the thrill of dragging the tree through the snow, and the anticipation of that mug of steaming hot chocolate before we headed home to decorate. The next four years (the years between tree farm visits) were spent trying to forget what a pain in the neck cutting a tree is: the long drive to numerous farms that had been over-harvested (unless you wanted a 4' tall tree...), the muddy clothes that result from lying on the ground while sawing the tree you eventually settled on, the sore muscles, the cold and wet gloves, the inevitable fight when people differed about which tree was best, the frustration of not being able to re-find the perfect tree that you spotted and then lost in the shuffle, the watery taste of the cheap cocoa, etc.

Attending Merrie Monarch is like that for me (sorry purists!). I'm glad I did it for the experience, but now I've gotten it out of my system for a while Smile
