Dr. Young Kim ? - Orchidlandguy - 04-30-2011

Anyone have any experience with Dr. Young Kim?
We are looking for a primary provider taking new patients in Hilo and Dr. Kim is. Anyone have any info on her?

My mom has chronic immune problems that have caused her disability. The new doctor she has is not working out. We think he is inexperienced with elderly and chronic conditions. He has a pill for every symptom and doesn't see the larger systemic problems. Not interested in the causes just treat each specific symptom.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Finding a doctor who takes new patients is nearly impossible <period>
There are people who don't like their doctor but are stuck with them because "see first statement".
I grew up in Hawaii and can't find one, so I go to Bay Clinic. There motto is "No one gets turned away". There is one in Keaau and one in Hilo. Doctors and nurses practitioners there come and go so you don't know who will be seeing you anytime you go there, but for me that's the best I can do. One good thing is that Bay Clinic can requisition a specialist for you to see if they have identified the problem and deem it necessary that you see one. That's one way that you can get your foot in the door with a specialist.

It has gotten much easier to find a doctor than it was a few years ago. This is just one of many recent threads on the topic, there are many different opinions given, judge for yourself:

All I can say is medical care is hard to find here, taropatch is on target as to what the way to go is for many people here in Puna and K'au especially.
We had a chance nationally to extend Medicare to all in 2009-2010, but our political class and corporate lobbyists made sure that didn't happen.
There have been some limited efforts in the Hawaii legislature to do something about universal single payer health care, but little result yet.

Can't help with the Dr rec, but do have a question as it "might" pertain to the situation with the current Dr. Why is she not on Medicare? My wife is on SS disability, but she actually was on Medicare first, not 65, but disabled due to severe accident. Our other insurance is second payer to Medicare. Good luck finding a provider, definitely can be frustrating.

I think David is correct. If she is on SSD, she will qualify for Medicare. Probably have to apply though.

She might want to see Dr. Hart Miller at the Puna Community Medical Center (PCMC) in the Pahoa Marketplace. If she needs to apply for Medicare or other services, the receptionist will help her. She doesn't need an appointment - it's walk-in. Dr. Miller is really nice and very thorough. Tuesday is a half-day, but she can walk in between 8 and 4:30 and discuss her healthcare needs.

Thanks for you responses i have lived in Puna 15 years so I am aware of how hard it is to get which is why I thought of asking at punaweb
Dr. Miller is the one who she is seeing. No problem getting into see him. He has a pill and cure for it all. Not good for chronic conditions.
Medicare not an issue. She has insurance from her old job. Medicare is not free. Would be deducted from the SSD as it is for everyone on SSD. No need to pay extra for Medicare when she ready has insurance paid for.

If anyone has a recommendation for a doc who is experienced with immune system diseases she would reAlly appreciate it.
Again thank you for your responses.

Does HMSA have a listing of all its participating providers? Thought they did. Check with them and see if they can refer your mom to a physician albeit might not be in the Hilo area.

Sundays Tribune Herald had a ad for a Dr. Paul A. Kaiwi Jr

Now opening an office in Hilo and accepting new patients,
call 808-446-0177

Adult and Adolescent Medicine
including *Pain Management* Acute and Chronic Illnesses*
Accepts most insurances including HMSA

If you Google his name, I think he had a practice in Maui.
