Axis deer - tada - 05-28-2011 Eat higher off the food chain!! http://outdoornewsdaily.com/index.php/archives/18620 RE: Axis deer - Kelena - 05-29-2011 Dang deer. Now why would anyone "import" them. Oh, yeah -- people looking for something --anything-- to shoot, other than clay pigeons. RE: Axis deer - tada - 05-29-2011 Maybe the "Eat local" movement brought them in. RE: Axis deer - Cagary - 05-30-2011 The article didn't say what Maui is doing about them. Are they being hunted? I know that one would have to be careful around populated areas, but putting a bounty on them would surely have an effect on the herds. Can Maui farmers get permits to shoot them? Can they be shot when sighted on the Big Island? What is being done on the Big Island right now? RE: Axis deer - tada - 05-30-2011 I think the same article was in the Honolulu paper and the frustrated commenter said if there's no open season you can't shoot them. I thought there was an open season on Maui traditionally in the fall. My cw tell me game management principle is the more animals you don't want the bigger the open season. Doesn't say how they got to the Big Island. Maybe they swam from Hana[:o)]- which is why they are on the Kohala side. Though when I was driving on Stainback hwy several years ago I thought I saw a flash of tan hide dissappear in the greenery. You'd think the deer would thrive in a place with lot of greenery and Stainback could use a trimming. |
