Chicken vs Mongoose - dwedeking - 06-25-2011 I've been thinking about getting a few chickens but I have a mongoose family that has moved into the place near where I want to keep the chickens. Does anyone have problems with the Mongoose attacking the chickens? (trying to avoid doing chicken wire around the whole area as it already has chain link fence) RE: Chicken vs Mongoose - Rob Tucker - 06-25-2011 My experience is that mongoose and chickens are a bad combo.... the chickens lose. Trap and kill the mongoose. Bait the trap with a golf ball. Keep the trap baited all the time. Put the mongoose down as humanely as you can but put them down. RE: Chicken vs Mongoose - Kaufarmer - 06-25-2011 When my hens were penned I lost a number of chickens to mongooses. I once came out to find 27 twelve week old chicks killed, all bitten in the head. None eaten, just killed, and a mongoose in their pen chewing on one. But now that my chickens are being pastured and thus can avoid the mongooses fairly well, I lose eggs. I've seen a mongoose run across the pasture with an egg in it's mouth. Wow, how can they open their jaws that wide? Mongooses and chickens don't coexist too well. I trap and kill every mongoose I can. When I go out and find the nest boxes devoid of eggs I know that I have another mongoose. ...Su Ba RE: Chicken vs Mongoose - dwedeking - 06-26-2011 Thanks. That's what I figured but as I'm new to the whole gardening/livestock thing I figured I'd ask. RE: Chicken vs Mongoose - tada - 06-27-2011 For mongoose hunting I bought a Crossman model 1377 air pistol from Sportsmans guide for $65 though I have seen cheaper prices since then- looks like the same as in the Boy's Life ads I saw 45 years ago. The packaging still says "Made in USA with foreign components." For pellets get the hunting type pellets not the old flathead wadcutters. RE: Chicken vs Mongoose - james weatherford - 06-27-2011 ditto the "bad combo" statement. Trap. Shoot. Dogs. |
